A large bar, decorated in vaguely Swingers-era '90s-meets-retro-'50s fashion, The Independent is a decent default option on the weekdays, and a too-packed pick-up joint on the weekends. Happy hours (2-for-1 cocktails, $5 appetizers) and ample seating are the big draws, and the fact that it's located in Calhoun Square (an upscale mall) means a built-in after-dinner crowd.
