Download: Elephant & Castle "I Will"

Burgeoning Bay Area-based producer Elephant & Castle has just released a new single (artwork above) for the Plug Research imprint, and has passed along the b-side, "I Will," to help spread the word. Beginning with a series of blissfully reversed chords, E&C implements a few choice samples of incomprehensible female vocals and gently strummed guitar, gradually revealing the shape of things to come. Joined by an ever-so-slightly off-kilter drum pattern and a sparse, glistening melody, the initial layers build and mold themselves into a vast, enveloping chorus of melancholy electronics. With a slow-brewing core and a host of reversed sonic treatments, "I Will" can at times feel akin to watching a hazy film, playing backwards, in slow motion, if you're stoned. The single comes with word that the label will be issuing an Elephant & Castle LP in the not-too-distant future, but for now we're happy to savor tracks like this until that day arrives.

Review: Peach Melba Can't Let Go

Label: DFA

There's something about John "Juan" MacLean that suggests he's a man that feels he has a lot to prove. From 2010's one-take all-vinyl DJ-Kicks to 2008's piano-house smash "Happy House," his output (not to mention his interviews) over the past three years has been focused almost exclusively on building an impenetrable aura of authenticity. It's not hard to guess why either: MacLean came to DJ culture late in life after maintaining a decidedly anti-DJ stance. With his new Peach Melba project (in collaboration with vocalist Amy Douglas), MacLean has created yet another channel for beefing up his dance music authority. Read more »

Check Out Krystal Klear's FACT Mix

Manchester-based DJ/producer Krystal Klear may not exactly be a regular on XLR8R, but there's no denying we're fans of his classically minded house and boogie productions. So, it should go without saying that we're pleased to see him take the reins on the latest installment of FACT's mix series. Read more »

Download: Danny Benedetinni "Chillers"

The Items and Things imprint (collectively run by techno stalwarts Magda, Troy Pierce, and Marc Houle) is set to release a new EP of "disco-tech, techno, and nu-disco with an almost industrial underpinning" today from DJ/producer Danny Benedettini. "Chillers" is one of the least disco-tinged tracks Tell Me Quietly (artwork above) has to offer, finding the newly Berlin-based producer folding a decent amount of deep, minimal tech-house stylings into the seven-plus-minute excursion. Throughout, the tune's steady, pulsating rhythm is accentuated by a handful of clever surprises including some delightful tom rolls and a host of lazer-sounding synths that pop and sizzle around every other corner.

Check Out a Podcast by Bulgarian Producer KiNK

While we're usually not too keen on directing people to sites that require registration, in the case of KiNK's latest podcast for Data Transmission, we'll make an exception. The Bulgarian leftfield techno producer and recent XLR8R-featured artist has dropped a fantastically eclectic mix that stands as a reminder as to why many up-and-coming producers name check KiNK as a direct influence. Download: DJ Wilson "Doutro Mundo"

Earlier in the month, the Swiss imprint Mental Groove released a compilation that focused on underground and unreleased kuduro tracks from an international list of artists, entitled Bazzerk: African Digital Dance (artwork above). Compiled by French DJs/producers Jess & Crabbe, the comp has a monster of a tracklist, with 27 total contributions from the likes of DJ Ketchup, Diamond Bass, Pacheko, and more. "Doutro Mundo" marks DJ Wilson's only solo contribution to the release, and finds the Portuguese producer crafting a slice of kuduro that places the style seamlessly into a future-bass context with precise percussion and an array of lazery synths.
