Download: Fur "Reverie"

Label: UNO

Texas-based producer Fur (a.k.a. Bryce Isbell) has just unleashed a free digital offering, the five-track Yonder EP, via UNO. The record includes "Reverie," which, as the title suggests, is a dreamy and minimalist jam with dark undertones contrasting the lighter moods evoked by the rest of Fur's EP. And if you're feeling "Reverie," be sure to grab the rest of Yonder for absolutely free, here.

Gear: Review: iZotope Alloy 2

iZotope's Alloy 2 plug-in is the software company's second attempt to make a one-stop shop for single-channel processing (the original version of Alloy was released back in 2010). Combining a parametric equalizer, transient designer, harmonic exciter, two dynamics modules, a de-esser, and a limiter into one plug-in, Alloy 2 covers almost all signal processing needs in one convenient package that strikes an effective balance between ease of use and audio quality. Download: Microburst "Clutch"

First Listen

The elusive South West England producer known as Microburst has just released his debut EP, Hadal Lagoon, on vinyl via Svetlana Industries (digital arrives on September 3). Although the artist is a relative newcomer to the world of electronic music, his tunes have already garnered big support, including a feature in Calvin Klein's Spring/Summer 2012 campaign. Despite the commercial success, Microburst is a producer who stays true to his artistic inclinations, with music naturally inspired by the oceanside he calls home. Featured here, Hadal Lagoon's lead tune, "Clutch," opens with soft, distant vocals coupled with the sounds of a rippling tide and strange effects that transport you into a futuristic sea storm. Slowly but surely, the production forms into a fully fledged groove propelled by a thick, sixteenth-note bass line, which is contrasted by soft, female vocals drenched in oceanic reverb. You can preview more of Microburst's forthcoming EP before it's downloadable, after the jump.  Read more »

Review: Deepchord Sommer

Label: Soma

Many try, but few artists succeed in making music like Rod Modell. The prolific Detroiter has been at work since the mid-'80s, producing a steady output of experimental material that somehow manages to retain a singular artistic vision. The Deepchord project—originally consisting of Modell and Mike Schommer—began around the turn of the '00s with a series of highly regarded 12" singles inspired by the dub-techno fusions of Basic Channel, Chain Reaction, and Moritz Von Oswald's M-Series. Far from being just another dub-techno knockoff, the duo demonstrated a unique mastery of the form, simultaneously filling the void left by Basic Channel's departure while still pushing the genre towards further unexplored processes. Download: Calski "Temperate"

First Listen

Bristol DJ/producer Calski is set to release his first original EP, called St. Andrews, via Parisian label Overcooked. In addition to his forthcoming record, the tunesmith is giving away an exclusive track for free download. Both the EP and "Temperate" are proof that you don't need complicated melodies and rhythms to make great music. Rather, all you need is the right combination of sounds and a unique style. While Calski hints at genres ranging from garage to deep house to grime, his music is inherently minimalist. He has a knack for isolating individual elements of his production, letting them breathe and shine to their fullest potential. If "Temperate" does the trick for you, be sure to check out the preview of Calski's forthcoming St. Andrews EP, after the jump.  Read more »

Download: Ambassadeurs "My World"

It's been sometime since we last caught a new track from Brighton-based DJ/producer Ambassadeurs, who seems to have used the time away from the studio to tour around Europe. The silence ends with "My World," a soulful jam driven by fuzzy, sweeping keys, a variety of 808 drums and percussion, and hypnotic vocal chops. Ambassadeurs' track leans on a few different genres—from trap to footwork—yet settles on none, instead teasing a variety of impulses that transition effortlessly into each other. The vocal hook speaks to the fleeting beats as the lyrics ask, "What am I supposed to do?"
