Beatwife (a.k.a. Planet Mu's Burnkane) recently released Cornbrail Acid (artwork above), a new album on Hyperboloid, a label headed up by Moscow's Pixelord and Acid Mafia. Below, you'll find album cut "Walk on Water", a forceful, tension-filled piece of ravey techno that brings equal portions of uneasiness and danceability to the table. You can hear Cornbrail Acid in its entirety here.
Over the past few months, a lot of space on XLR8R has been devoted to the exploits of Los Angeles DJ/producer Samo Sound Boy, a Trouble & Bass-affiliated artist who recently struck out on his own with Body High, a new label he's launched with Jerome Potter of LOL Boys. The pair have also begun producing together under the name DJ Dodger Stadium, a project which delivered the inaugural Body High release in early October. Only six weeks later, the young imprint is humming along nicely, having dropped a second EP from the mysterious DJ Funeral, with several more releases already lined up for the months ahead. As such, we figured now would be a good time to invite Samo Sound Boy to put together an exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast series. Read more »
The New York City beatsmith formerly known as InfinitiRock, now operating under the guise of Raja, recently unleashed a bevy of new tracks in the form of three beat tapes for the Astro Nautico imprint, respectively titled Red, Witch, and Color. Here, we have a tune from Color (artwork above), a collection of songs which finds the young producer exploring his more abstract and futuristic inklings. "Luv (Someone Else)" is a fine example, pitting a soulful, almost funky, synth progression against a skittering beat and tuned kick drums for a melancholy outing that is still befitting of some solid head-nodding. After giving the tune a listen below, you can head to the Astro Nautico Bandcamp to cop all three Raja beat tapes—which cover everything from dusty slices of instrumental hip-hop to solemn solo piano endeavors—for free.
It's been almost four years since Marcel Dettmann released Berghain 02, the scene-defining mix that seemed to totally encapsulate the (then) new sound of Berlin. Since then, Dettmann's kept himself incredibly busy, not only with his residency at Berghain, but also with his own productions (2010 saw the release of his debut LP, Dettmann, on Ostgut Ton). At this point, it seems like just about everyone has seen Drive, the hyper-stylized Ryan Gosling flick highlighted by cool driving scenes, gratuitous violence, and a decidedly '80s-influenced soundtrack. The most memorable tune from the movie is undoubtedly "A Real Hero," by French outfit College, with some help from Canadian duo Electric Youth. So how does Brooklyn producer Michna factor in? Apparently, he wanted to make a remix of the track for the club, but without access to the stems, elected to instead just make his own version of the song, minus the (somewhat cheesy) vocals and with a little extra punch on the drums. Even better, he's elected to share the thing with the world as a free download. Put this one on and watch everyone freak out. "Oh my God! It's that song from Drive! Ryan Gosling is soooo hot." Thanks Michna.
Jamie Teasdale (pictured above) has already turned plenty of heads with the recent release of his debut album as Kuedo, Severant, but now he's apparently decided to up the ante by sharing this remix from shape-shifting Brooklyn producer (and Planet Mu labelmate) FaltyDL. Moving away from the house- and garage-leaning productions he's been turning out as of late, FaltyDL transforms the melodic brevity of the original "Shutter Light Girl" into a low-slung, half-step offering that still carries plenty of emotional heft. Grab a 320 MP3 below, or audiophiles can head here to grab a higher-quality AIFF file.
