Download: RL Grime "Grapes Alla Vodka"

Label: Wedidit

The Wedidit collective is home to a number of talented beatmakers, including Groundislava, eLan, Jonwayne (who helmed our latest podcast), and frequent XLR8R subject Shlohmo. Today, the crew is dropping its first official release, a solo effort by New York City native RL Grime. The Grapes EP is his debut release, and opening cut "Grapes Alla Vodka" is a big, brash, and addictive slice of Houston-flavored crunk anchored by a gargantuan synthesizer that drips a spooky, syrup-laden melody over the jam's flickering claps and cymbals. To celebrate the release, Wedidit has created 100 iron-on patches featuring RL Grime's tombstone logo that are available when you purchase the digital package, which also features remixes from Shlohmo, Salva, LOL Boys, and Groundislava. Grab "Grapes All Vodka" below, and stream the new EP in its entirety after the jump.  Read more »

Gear: Review: Animoog for iPad

The Animoog app for the iPad has its share of limitations, mainly due to the fact that's it's limited to a 9.5" x 7.3" screen. That said, it's still one of the best-sounding and performing software synthesizers on the market today, especially considering its incredible price point, giving you access to a polyphonic "eight-timbre" synth based on classic Moog sounds for under $30. Download: Pazes "Rogue States feat. Biblo"

Red Bull Music Academy has provided no small number of gifted electronic artists over the past 14 years, giving us such luminaries as Nina Kraviz, Hudson Mohawke, and Om Unit, to name but a few. Pazes is a recent grad of the 2011 Madrid edition of RBMA, hailing from Brasilia and working here with another RBMA grad, Istanbul-based artist Biblo (whom we posted about a few weeks back), on this new offering, "Rogue States." The tune is a sweet, melancholic trip to the shadowy outreaches of post-Dilla hip-hop, swirling in a humid yet comfortable climate of descending keys, compressed sub pulses, and a sumptuously treated feminine vocal line. It's a rich and warm jam from two up-and-coming producers that really brings out the feel of Tri Angle Records and the more loving end of the LA beat scene.

Review: Bicep $tripper

Download: Torkelsen "Ugle"

Label: Sellout!

This is the second time we're hearing of the sampling prowess of one Kristian Torkelsen, a self-professed crate-digger and vinyl-manipulating artist operating out of Fredrikstad, Norway. He's sent through a nifty little number from his debut LP, a vintage Ninja Tune-sounding effort entitled "Ugle." Traces of old-school Amon Tobin and the wax-plundering ethos of Stones Throw could be reference points for the work of Torkelsen, but when listening to the track, it's important to acknowledge just how far "out there" he really goes with his sampling, pulling in disparate sources from what is likely a large cache of forgotten plates. There really isn't a whole lot of concrete information on this 23-year-old producer as of yet, but you can check out the rest of his self-titled debut LP, after the jump.  Read more »

Download: Ooko "Spectral Worlds"

First Listen

Bristolian producer Ooko steps through with a free track preceding his debut release via Mimm, the Sex Sells EP, which is available on May 28 on vinyl and June 6 on digital. "Spectral Worlds" is a speckled and low-slung house number that accurately reflects the current climate of Bristol. Heavyweight kicks make it known early on that this is indeed a dancefloor number—albeit in the vein of the Idle Hands crew, with a half-lidded, early morning vibe stumbling through the proceedings in style. Perhaps, the defining characteristic of Ooko's track is his embellishment of peak-time synthesizers coiled around the narcotic beat, a high-definition and moody touch of what sounds like a requiem for an Ibizan dream. You can stream all of Ooko's Sex Sells EP after the jump.  Read more »
