Bubblin' Up: Helix

"Did you hear what he said? He asked what the music scene is like [in Savannah]." Helix (a.k.a. Beau Thigpen) is already chuckling, but once he throws out the question to his friends—several of whom are lurking in the background and periodically chiming in—the laughter becomes uproarious. Still struggling to compose himself, he eventually boils it down to a simple observation: "There's no scene at all here." Granted, this isn't too surprising, as Eastern Georgia isn't exactly known as a hotbed of musical innovation. Nonetheless, it is the city which the 20-year-old producer—who also happens to be the latest addition to the Night Slugs roster—calls home. Read more »

Download: Sweatson Klank "Always You"

First Listen

LA-based producer Sweatson Klank, formerly known as Take, has a new EP coming to Project: Mooncircle on May 4, but today, we have the first tune off the release, "Always You." We've previously posted on the organic, intricately formed nature of Mr. Klank's tunes, and "Always You" is no different in its richly realized aesthetic. A multitude of syncopated synths color in the shifting 2-step beat, with alternately pitched vocal samples bouncing in and around the proceedings like an Amazonian frog navigating its natural environment. It's a fitting metaphor, as the productions of Sweatson Klank are akin to a fully immersive, digitally fluorescent forest in which the listener just can't help but lose themselves. Stream a preview of the rest of the Elevate EP and peep the cover art, after the jump.  Read more »

Download: NKC "Radar (feat. F. Reece)"

Courtesy of the Awkward Movements stable in London, here's a funky and classic-sounding number from 20-year-old producer NKC. This unreleased tune precedes the artist's new Afrobeat-tinged EP for the label, Fading Floor/Shockout, which is out on May 7 and features remixes by Maddslinky and Raimo. "Radar" didn't make it onto that EP, but is nonetheless a driving dancefloor number that settles its groove on a laid-back organ sample, all while utilizing vocals from young Welsh folk artist F. Reece. A secret weapon of sorts, this one boasts similarities to the feminine UK funky stylings of Cooly G and, more recently, Champion and Ruby Lee Ryder's anthem "Sensitivity." You can preview the new NKC four-tracker after the jump.  Read more »

Download: Artifact "Brittle Bones"

This propulsive, shifty cut of bass-centric techno arrives today from up-and-coming Bristol tunesmith Artifact, who has signed to Local Action for a forthcoming record. "Brittle Bones" precedes that release, however, acting as a sort of introduction to the artist and his well-crafted club tunes, and is paired with another free cut, called "Freezedry." You can nab Artifact's gratis collection directly, here, or stream and download each cut individually via the SoundCloud player embedded after the jump.  Read more »

Download: XXXChange "Scrying For You"

First Listen
Label: T&A

Over the past few years, XXXChange has been a behind-the-scenes staple, producing beats for the likes of Spank Rock, Amanda Blank, and Kid Sister while also turning out remixes of Thom Yorke, Bjork, and Santigold. After all that work, he's apparently decided that the time has come for his first proper solo outing, the Bounce EP (artwork above), which is being released via T&A. "Scrying For You" is taken from the EP, and finds the producer spinning out percolating melodies that seem to hover in space as a bruising warehouse beat pumps reverbed swells into the corners of the track. The Bounce EP drops on April 17.
