Mosca to Release New EP Via 3024

As we pointed out in our glowing review of the "Done Me Wrong" b/w "Bax" 12" by UK bass juggler Mosca, the producer is a bit of a shape-shifter, and isn't quite what we would call prolific. Now it would seem that maybe we were only half right, as Martyn's 3024 imprint has just announced it will release a new EP from the artist shortly after he dropped the aforementioned 12" via Numbers. Watch Theo Parrish Rap with Ghostface Killah

Admittedly, this is only news in the most marginal sense of the word, but apparently Detroit house legend Theo Parrish hopped onstage last night during a Ghostface Killah show and rapped Ol' Dirty Bastard's famous verse from "Protect Ya Neck." This is definitely one of those WTF moments, and yes, it was captured on film. Read more »

Download: Maguett "Loud Bell"

Label: G5

Russia's relatively fresh G5 (standing for "gimme 5," of course) imprint passed along this tune from its newest release, a six-track EP from up-and-comer Maguett entitled Twilight. "Loud Bell" is the kind of slow-burner that can either lull you into a head-nodding trance or gradually draw you out of your surroundings and into its futuristic haze. Not to make it sound like Maguett is the kind of producer who conjures up billowy soundscapes; the Russian architectural student instead places his crunchy noise in delicate nooks and crannies, allowing the detailed (albeit sparse) percussion to anchor the tender chords and occasional synth modulations which appear at the song's edges. And for those who pay close enough attention, there's even the faintest touch of pitched vocals, adding another subtle layer to this reserved yet intriguing outing.

XLR8R x Beatport: FaltyDL

The Beatport sales charts are often dominated by the latest international club smashes, but its vault of music runs deep and covers a wide variety of artists and sounds, which is why XLR8R has been asked to curate a special two-week series of Beatport charts by some of our favorite DJs and producers. Brooklyn beatmaker FaltyDL may be affiliated with the nebulous world of bass music, but in recent years he's applied his meticulous methodology to tracks that could be labeled as garage, house, techno, and more. He's also stepped up his DJ game, and here are 10 of his favorite tools for the dancefloor. Read more »

Download: Monokle "Luch"

Label: Fuselab

This warm cut of melodious beat work comes all the way from St. Petersburg, Russia, where one Vlad Kudryavtsev (a.k.a Monokle) crafted his newest EP, Birds Swirl (artwork above). This particular tune hails from the second half of the EP and finds the producer tinkering with heavy beats, gliding synth leads, and rich layers of smooth guitar. The results can at times be reminiscent of Bibio (if he was more street-obsessed, perhaps) or even sound like a more energetic take on Shlohmo's more recent guitar-based efforts. All comparisons aside, "Luch" is in itself a rather impressive quasi-futuristic instrumental, and one that can be found along with five other similarly vibrant pieces of abstract beatsmithery on the recently released Birds Swirl EP.
