Gear: This Week in Music Tech: In Moderat's Studio, Jon Hopkins' Found Sounds, MPC for iPhone, and More

While it might not have been the busiest week in the world of music tech, the bits that did find their way to the web surely were enough to keep us busy. This week, we check in with Moderat at the group's Berlin studio to talk both producing and performing live, review Livid Instruments' new Base controller, hear found sounds from Jon Hopkins, check out the iMPC for iPhone, and share an in-depth—and incredibly easy to comprehend—video which details the individual properties of analog and digital audio. Gear: Review: Livid Base

Hot on the heels of Ableton's Push controller (which we reviewed back in April) comes Livid Instruments' Base, the newest design from the boutique, Austin-based shop. Push provides a rather interesting point of comparison: The two pieces of hardware have much in common physically, while the underlying philosophy has anything but. Where Push was designed to work in a particular way with a specific piece of software, Base is largely what you make of it, a more generic blank slate that's willing to accommodate a host of varied approaches. Gear: From Studio to Stage: Moderat

This is a big week for Moderat. Not only will the German trio—which consists of Modeselektor (a.k.a. Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian "Charlie" Szary) and Apparat (a.k.a. Sascha Ring)—be releasing its long-awaited sophomore album, II, but it will also be debuting a brand-new live show at London's Eastern Electrics festival. Curious to find out more about the nuts and bolts of Moderat's technical process, last week we paid a visit to the trio's Berlin studio/rehearsal space, which is located on the 12th floor of a high rise near Alexanderplatz. (For the record, it's actually Modeselektor's permanent studio, but for the time being, it's also serving as Moderat HQ.) While there, we spoke at length with Apparat and Szary, who detailed both the production methods behind II and the challenges of translating the LP to the live arena. Read more »

Gear: Watch Mike Huckaby's Ableton Live 9 Masterclass

Though Live 9 and the Push controller have been around for a good portion of 2013 already (our review of the music-making tools can be found here), it's unlikely that everyone has had enough time to dive deep into every feature and intricacy that Ableton's new units have to offer. Thankfully, Detroit house/techno icon and experienced music teacher Mike Huckaby has just shared a lengthy video giving would-be producers some keen insight into using Live 9, as well as some of his general production tips.
