Gear: In the Studio: Gatekeeper

On Exo, the just-released debut full-length from Gatekeeper, the Brooklyn-based duo obsesses over a simulated HD world, an effort akin to sifting through the ruins of an ancient MP3.com society. Conjuring the endless awe and wonder of CD-ROMs, the Roland 303, and glass-casted studios set in the jungle, the LP was created using hyper-produced Hollywood Sound Libraries fashioned in multi-million dollar studios, further modulated by radical macro-envelopes that were inspired by a recent visit to Stonehenge. In hopes of shedding a little light on the pair's artistic outlook, not to mention its production techniques, we visited Aaron Ross and Matthew Arkell in their Bushwick studio, where we admired their jungle plants and a full-sized gong. Gear: Watch Mala, Carl Craig, and Midland Discuss the Importance of Soundsystems

News flash: Soundsystems are important! It seems like a simple fact, but still one that is so often overlooked in the hustle and bustle of party promoting and club nights. The subject is discussed further in this video from the folks behind Croatia's Dimensions Festival, as we get a chance to hear a bit of the frustrations and joys inherent across the entire spectrum of soundsystem reinforcement from three men—Mala, Carl Craig, and Midland—who have seen their share of it all. Gear: Review: Izotope Iris

One of the heavy hitters in the visual sound editing business, iZotope's spectrogram-based audio restoration suite RX has long been aimed at those looking to clean, polish, and otherwise restore audio files. With Iris, the developer has taken this fairly mundane concept and transformed it into a plugin that's being called a "sampling resynthesizer," aimed primarily at music makers. Read more »

Gear: Watch a Behind-the-Scenes Video with Native Instruments' Mostly Robot Ensemble

This year's Sónar festival brought no shortage of progressive electronic music to the picturesque coastal city of Barcelona, and in that spirit, the Berlin software/hardware manufacturers at Native Instruments put together a five-piece "supergroup" of an ensemble for a one-off performance (though it has since booked further gigs), calling the outfit Mostly Robot. In this behind-the-scenes video, we get a glimpse of the gear which brought the crew (the ranks of which includes Jamie Lidell and Tim Exile) together, along with a few bits of its Sónar performance. Gear: In the Studio: Matthewdavid

Over the past few years, the loose network of LA-based producers and DJs who have been lumped together under the (admittedly murky) umbrella of the "beat scene" has become rather crowded. Nevertheless, a few artists within that world continue to stand out as true originals, one of them being Matthewdavid, the Brainfeeder-inked sound experimentalist who also heads up the innovative Leaving Records imprint. XLR8R actually ventured into Matthewdavid's home last year, around the time his Outmind LP was making its way into the world, but we decided to make a return trip, this time in hopes of getting the skinny on the artist's production methods, gear preferences, and studio secrets.
