This week, beloved UK DJ/producer Four Tet broke 100K followers on his Twitter account, and celebrated the occasion by posting 15 unreleased and (largely) unheard tracks for free download. One of the highlights from that eclectic selection of tunes is the swinging "101112," a simple production which sounds like the missing link from between There Is Love in You and Pink. Four Tet's garage-indebted beat kicks and skips over funky sub-bass, hiccuping vocal chops, and a thin mist of reverb to make for an effective DJ tool with plenty of personality. The rest of the free music posted by the artist born Kieran Hebden can be nabbed here, courtesy of Death and Taxes.
After first introducing itself to the XLR8R faithful earlier this year with Keepsakes' "Kontaina" (a cut that ranked pretty high as one of the Top Downloads on our site this year), Poland's Sequel One imprint is wrapping up 2013 with a new compilation, Groove Sounds & Twisted Rhythms Vol. II. Included in the forthcoming seven-track collection is Chilllito's "Lucidity," an industrial-streaked slice of moody garage which comes laced with the kind of icy pads and sun-starved melodies that fit the winter season perfectly. On December 21, the entirety of Groove Sounds & Twisted Rhythms Vol. II will be available as a free download via Sequel One's Bandcamp.
New York-based producer Lou DiBenedetto (a.k.a. Headlock) follows up his self-titled debut—from which we shared the wistful cut "High Beams" as a free download—with an ambient edit of Janet Jackson's "Love Scene (Ooh Baby)" single from 2001. Dedicated to his "sweetheart" Total Freedom, "Love Obscene" is a breathy, reverb-drenched take on Jackson's sensual original song, which smears the vocals and percussion together in a celestial haze of synth pads.
Before wrapping up its first year as a label, Long Island-based label South Fork Sound have put together a free compilation for the holidays. Featuring nine tracks which skirt the lines between leftfield and dubwise club sounds, the particularly restless "My Orchestra" from Volatil serves as one of the collection's standout cuts. Playing to its favor, the four-plus-minute tune seems unable to sync up with one particular groove, its jumpy chords and morphing percussion enticing the listener to follow their unconventional patterns to the track's end. South Fork Sound's entire A Very South Fork Christmas comp—which features additional cuts from Blind Prophet, Cauto, and others—can be grabbed as a name-your-price download here.
This year has seen a swelling of producers trafficing in raw, noisy, hardware-centric tracks, but "Snacks," a new tune from Brooklyn-based artist Headaches (a.k.a. Landon Speers), is an intriguing study in the soothing power of crystalline sonics. Ethereal waves of melodies weave in and out of clean kicks and bright, snappy percussion layers while a reversed synth pad congregates with a rumbling bass. "Snacks" finds Speers effortlessly lacing together several counter-melodies and low-end girth, resulting in a hypnotic tapestry of sound.
Signed to the young GetMe! label, Manchester-based producer Pále is a budding talent whose Playing Truant EP from earlier this year saw him collaborate with vocalist Joshua Idehen (possibly best known for his work on LV's Routes LP for Hyperdub). Left off of that release is a hazy collaborative cut with Idehen called "Let Them Talk," a production which rides an ambient burst into thick kicks and circulating ride cymbals to build up its dusty and emotive sound palette. Plaintive piano lines, a funk-laden bass groove, and chiming synths phase and weave together as the track escalates its soothing finish.
In collaboration with music blog Neo Violence, Prague-based electronic label Beef is releasing the Neo Violence compilation on December 23, featuring 10 globe-spanning cuts from the likes of New York's Policy, Serbia's Reblok, Italy's Kid Mark, and others. "Perc"—a stripped-down house offering from Chilean producer Daniel Klauser—marries a processed, swirling synth with an unabashedly cheesy bassline, as crisp percussion drives the skeletal production forward. Ahead of Neo Violence's official release, a sampling of the compilation's other tracks can be heard after the jump. Read more »
