London duo No Artifical Colours is the latest outfit to appear on Kerri Chandler's fast-growing MadTech imprint, and judging from "Love"—a tune featuring the talents of one Sheff—the pair will fit in nicely with the sultry house sound the label has made its bread and butter. The tune offered here, which comes from No Artifical Colours's recent Crying Wolf EP, is a slick slice of classic-minded house. Stripped into an effecient shape, "Love" skips and rolls with no particular destination in mind, rather it is the groove the tune locks into which makes this one an inviting listen. Boston's arguably biggest dance-music export Soul Clap has released a compilation that shines a spotlight on its hometown of Boston and that city's recent swathes of under-the-radar talent. Soul Clap presents: Dancing on the Charles—named after the outdoor parties the duo put on five years ago—unearths a number of budding Boston producers and aspires to tell the story of the city's electronic music scene. Here, Soul Clap has offered its own remix of synth-pop band Mystery Roar's "Mayhem," which is transformed into a loose, so-called "EFUNK" jam, with its woozy vocals and evocative synths underpinned by rich, bouncing bass.
Zouk Bass is one of the latest global sounds to attract attention online after Portuguese group Buraka Som Sistema's recent Boiler Room session featured the style—a fusion of French Antillean zouk music and UK bass sounds. In light of this recent attention, purveyors of global-minded club music Generation Bass are releasing the Deep in Zouk Bass EP, which pairs together two London-based Portuguese/Angolan expats in Deejay Kuimba and 2Pekes. The latter producer's "Txillo" is a skeletal affair, dominated by a thin, infectious synth line and driven by its slow kick drum and intricate, double-time percussion.
It may not be the most obvious piece of insight to glean when first listening to "Pulp," but Connecticut-based beatsmith Color Plus (a.k.a. Lars Probert) was more commonly heard crafting hip-hop minded, Brainfeeder-esque beats in the past. Beginning with last year's self-released Cerulean Dream LP, the producer has taken his sound into more experimental territory while also turning to the more addictive tropes of UK garage—the organ stabs, tastefully chopped vocal samples, and one-off drum fills. "Pulp" focuses on those selected garage elements, juggling two simple chord progressions under a beat that flips between 126 and 92 bpm effortlessly. Probert's evolution parallels much of the East Coast beat scene he is associated with, a scene which is beginning to lurch—sometimes begrudgingly—towards a slightly more experimental, yet dancefloor-focused mindset as of late. At this point, there is no permanent home for "Pulp," but look for the tune to land on an official release sometime this summer.
London techno producer Ore's dubby, slightly swung "Rise"—a tune released last month on the man's State EP for Civil—has received the remix treatment courtesy of Manni Dee (pictured above). In the capable hands of the Brighton producer—who himself has recently received notice for a pair of collaborative, juke-driven 12"s alongside Deft—the heavy-handed original is stretched out to nine minutes with its pummeling back-room techno bookended by moments of chilly abstraction.
Lowb (a.k.a. Andy Barlow, one-half of UK pair Lamb) is prepping his first outing as a solo producer, with his debut album Leap and the Net Will Appear set for release via Distiller on June 3. A week prior however, Lowb will be releasing an EP based around the forthcoming album's lead single "Inward Outburst." The tune's languid chill, however, might be in even better hands with Synkro, whose rework begins as bleary-eyed as one might expect, with shimmering, oceanside chords trading places with a windswept synth pattern. All the tricks of Synkro's trade are out in full force—miles-deep low-end, longing female vocals, and the likes fill out the track—but in a surprising turn, the real standout element Synkro employs is a bit of enticing percussion, which gradually grows more fierce as the tune rolls on.
Set for release at the end of this month via Pets, Amsterdam-based producer Uffe's new EP, Times All (artwork above), is a downtempo-house hybrid, traversing the line between detailed electronic pop and club-ready four-on-the-floor modes. Here we have a remix from veteran Polish producer Envee of EP track "Valentine's Card," which spreads out the sparse and melancholic house chords of the original, infusing the remix with a particularly satisfying squiggly synthline and vocals buried deep into the mix. While Envee's rework will not be included on the upcoming Times All EP, remixes by Jon Convex and Acid Pauli will be alongside a trio of Uffe's original productions.
