Originally appearing on Neneh Cherry's Four Tet-produced Blank Project LP (released via Smalltown Supersound earlier this year), "Spit Three Times" has been handed over to Lee Bannon for a remix treatment. As one would expect from the former XLR8R podcast contributor (who has an EP of his own on the way), the rework finds Bannon taking Cherry's track deep beneath layers of icy chords and cavernous textures, allowing the seasoned vocalist's lyrics only to seep through the few small cracks left in his murky reconstruction.
Today sees the release of the debut LP from Swedish duo Gidge (a.k.a. Ludvig Stolterman and Jonatan Nilsson) via Applescal's Atomnation label. Pulled from the nine-track Autumn Bells LP is "Dusk," a moody production which finds the pair lacing a crisp, skipping beat with long-winded pads and rich melodic tones. Spanning over nine minutes, the patient effort swings unhurried through its movements, giving the listener ample time to sink into each section of the dense, far-reaching production. Out now, Gidge's debut full-length, Autumn Bells, can be streamed after the jump. Read more »
Much like the artwork for its upcoming Solid EP, Claude's productions are deceivingly clean and simple. The result of a partnership between French beatmakers Fulgeance and Darius Broobecker, Claude takes a rather direct route to combining bits of classic disco and house with the sonic weight of UK bass—all of which comes wrapped together with an undeniably French touch. "In Love," the closing effort from the pair's upcoming debut EP, fits finely chiseled slices of soul between sharp and efficient drum programming, resulting in a track that smacks and pops while also maintaing a cool air about it. Available to grab for free below, "In Love" will be joined by six other original productions from Claude when the duo's Solid EP lands on October 6 via Musique Large.
Wild Highways is the project of Toronto's Cody Dyck, a guitarist who began crafting beats after relocating from the "Canadian prairies" to his current, more urban surroundings. At the moment, Wild Highways appears to be in its beginning stages, with only a handful of tracks on SoundCloud (all of which come accompanied by self-made videos) to its credit so far. One such effort is "Enter the Neu!," a synth-streaked production which places swimming chords, lopsided arpeggios, and an array of angelic R&B vocal chops atop its active rhythmic base. A restless electronic hybrid, "Enter the Neu!" serves as a welcome first peek into what the budding Toronto talent may have up his sleeve as he continues to hone his craft.
Earlier this month, Italian producer Cristiano Crisci (a.k.a. Digi G'Alessio) dropped his debut LP as Clap! Clap! via the Black Acre imprint. Entitled Tayi Bebba, the record was conceptualized as a tour of an imagined island, with each track said to represent a place, event, or ritual (the LP even came accompanied by a full story, explaining what each production represented in G'Alessio's imagined world). Now, the remixes have begun to roll in with UK producer—and fellow Black Acre affiliate—Lurka being enlisted to take on the tribal vibes of LP cut "Ashiko." Stretching the track out past the five-minute mark, Lurka reimagines "Ashiko" as a more industrial-minded production, trading in the drum machine tones of G'Alessio's track for more machine-made bits of percussion and textured drones. Lurka's remix can be downloaded below while the video for Clap Clap!'s original track can be viewed here.
Moscow-based analog enthusiast Chizh will issue a new 12" via the Chicago-based Glenview imprint later this month. A four track effort, the record will host two original cuts alongside a pair of remixes from The Mole and AntonZap. Serving as a preview is "Don't Turn," the second of Chizh's original efforts which shows off the Russian beatmaker's taste for classic techno tones. Built around a clap-heavy four-on-the-floor, the six-minute outing weaves a series of adventurous synth lines around its steady rhythms, sneaking acid-tweaked sequences and pulsing strings behind a bevy of restless leads. Expected to land later this month, Chizh's upcoming Foux Control/Don't Turn 12" can be previewed after the jump. Read more »
Hailing from Los Angeles, Shiva is the latest producer to drop an effort via the Unspeakable, an all-female record label helmed by fellow LA beatmaker Dot. Serving as the title track to her recent effort, "Dark Moon" is a moody production which coyly exists along the spacier ends of the bass-music spectrum. Led by sharp, electro-indebted rhythms, the track gently sways as it unrolls thick pads, laid-back synth bass, and miniature guitar licks throughout its three-plus-minute run. Released earlier this week, Shiva's full Dark Moon EP can be streamed after the jump. Read more »
