Feel-good synth-pop is all fine and well, but The Secret Handshake's vocoder-heavy original version of "Summer of '98" trembles in comparison to this remix of the track. Milan-based duo Crookers has worked its magic and transformed the number into a hypnotic, hard-hitting rave anthem that's at least a few worlds away from the original. Meanwhile, The Secret Handshake's new album, My Name Up In Lights, will drop April 21 on Triple Crown.

Fans of Deerhoof, The Mae Shi, or post-punk in general should enjoy this track, the first offering of 2009 from Oakland, CA-based trio Tempo No Tempo. Rumor has it that big plans are afoot for the band this year (which include SXSW appearances), but in the meantime, keep this guitar-laden track, along with 2007's Repetition EP, on rotation.
Thieves Like Us claims its new album, Play Music, is mostly about "love gone wrong." Throw that subject matter over music influenced equally by disco, hip-hop, and pop, and you have a rather bittersweet affair good for dancing or crying to. Play Music is out March 10 on Fantasy Memory/Shelf Life.
Everything She Touched Turned Ampexian—the latest album from Prefuse 73—garnered its name from the fact that Scott Herren recorded tracks straight to an analog Ampex tape, thereby giving his trademark avant-hop a grainy, somewhat nostalgic feel. Everything She Touched Turned Ampexian will be out April 14 on Warp.
Self-proclaimed "melodi-psych" rockers, A Shoreline Dream, has just released its second full-length, Recollections of Memory. The haunting, echoed vocals and cloud-like composition of this psychedelic, chord-rippled first single feel like a winter snowstorm. Recollections of Memory is out now on Late Night Weeknight Records.
The historically sinister Mux Mool (Brian Lindgren) is back with a new EP that, if “End Guy” is an indicator, sounds like he employed a 30-member choir and as many synths for production purposes on the new release. Lindgren made this Radio Edit of the track exclusively for XLR8R, while meanwhile, the Just Saying is All EP will be out March 17 on iTunes and March 31 elsewhere.
Warped synth lines, quivering electronics, and guest vocals by French Horn Rebellion's Robert Perlick-Molinari converge on the first single from Pfunkt's self-titled debut longplayer, and it's a rather brooding affair. Pfunkt will be available as a pay-what-you-want download on February 14.
