Download: Tempo No Tempo "The Rat (Part One)"

Borrowing equally from dissonant, late-'90s DC punk and more contemporary takes on sprawling indie rock, Tempo No Tempo's "The Rat (Part One)" bounces between tense rhythms and the pitter-patter of relaxed backbeats before resting permanently in tapestries of delayed guitar and crashing cymbals. The trio may wear their influences on their collective sleeve, but it's refreshing to hear this stripped-down and visceral sound coming from the fertile San Francisco underground.

Download: Tiefschwarz "Trust (feat. Seth Troxler)"

Label: Souvenir

Chunky handclaps, a marimba-like melody line, and some deep, deep kicks are what make this recent collaboration between Tiefschwarz and Seth Troxler really move. Though Troxler's spoken vocals are a bit dubious, Tiefschwarz's production skills are in top form, bringing much more funkiness to his grooves than in recent productions.

Download: Vitalic "See the Sea (Red)"

Label: PIAS

Another taste from Vitalic's latest album, the upcoming Flashmob—from which we shared a minimix preview of earlier this month,—"See the Sea (Red)" is distorted, melodic French electro served straight up. If this track is any indication, the seasoned French producer hasn't lost his knack for rave-appropriate soundscapes that never forget the importance of the almighty beat.

Download: Sprutbass "Matt Huffley"

Label: Dødpop

Here at XLR8R, we've had our ears blown away by the recent skweee sounds coming from Scandinavia, evidenced by our feature on the genre in issue 127. A new compilation from one of the genre's flagship labels features this monster, a squeaky, anthemic take on dubstep rhythms featuring frenetic synth modulations and acidy flourishes. Watch out for future Sprutbass releases, as his diversity of influences and textures is quickly making him one of the stars of the Oslo scene.

Download: Hot Natured "Red Light District"

Label: Culprit

In celebration of the label's second release, LA's Culprit label is giving the world a fantastic slice of music from the artists who populated their first outing. Hot Natured (a.k.a. Lee Foss and Jamie Jones) certainly turned heads with the h.e.a.d.s. EP earlier this year (for more Jones-related goodness, also peep his new album, Don't You Remember the Future), and here they team up again, so if you like what's going down you can go back and grab their EP along with the next Culprit release from Kenneth James Gibson, a.k.a. [a]pendics.shuffle. Gibson's Animals Tonight comes out this week.

Download: port-royal "hva (failed revolutions)"

Label: n5md

Imagine Aphex Twin, Enya, and Slowdive getting together to toke some reefer and rub crystals on their foreheads. The sonic vibrations formed by such a gathering might result in something like port-royal's "hva (failed revolutions),"the first track on dying in time, a new album out soon on Oakland's n5md label. A real dreamy number, the piece is full of synth swells, ethereal watery vocals, clicks, and kicks that are perfect for autumn daydreams. And if you're in the mood for more otherworldly sounds, check out the podcast n5md put together for us awhile back.

Download: Sugar & Gold "Slice Me Nice"

San Francisco's androgynous party sex band Sugar & Gold have just unleashed their cover of the somewhat laughable Hi-NRG classic, Fancy's "Slice Me Nice." With a fuller, brighter sound than the original, along with vocals that are considerably less creepy than those of schlag-crooner Manfred Alois Perilano, the track actually makes the connection between cake and sex work quite well. With a second album and a massive tour coming up, Sugar & Gold are poised to become the next Gravy Train!!!, but with a bit more disco in their pants (or lack thereof).
