Loading... E3 ’08 Report!

It’s been a while, but we are back in full effect with the latest from the E3 Expo! Nothing too terribly earth-shattering, but we break it down into digestible chunks for you here, dear reader!

Microsoft

Final Fantasy XIII Coming to Xbox 360
By far one of the biggest pieces of news out of E3, the longtime Sony exclusive Final Fantasy series is coming to the Xbox 360 the same day as the PS3. No date was given, but we imagine Holiday 2009 would be a safe bet.

Gears of War 2 Dated
Perhaps the biggest 360 title of the year, the gory sci-fi shooter is set to hit Nov 7th. Chainsaws and Meat Shields abound!

Bungie Working on New Halo Game
Microsoft mentioned that another Halo was in the works, but didn't discuss details and actually blocked what was to be some sort of reveal by Bungie this week. However, it is widely expected that this new Halo will not feature Master Chief.

New Xbox Live Interface
A more minimal Xbox Live dashboard, dubbed the "New Xbox Experience," is going to be available sometime this year and feature a smoother, more intuitive interface. Finally. Shit was, like, looking for a lemon zester in grandma’s tool drawer.

Avatars
Pretty much a response the popularity of Nintendo's Mii's, these will be used in a similar manner on Xbox Live.

Netflix
As of this "holiday season," your queue can be modified via Xbox Live and you will also be able to download movie streams directly from Netflix. The quality is said to be sub-DVD however. So… yeah.

New Controller Colors
Red and Green. So you can pretend Santa’s elves puked on them? Awesome!

Nintendo

Wii Motion Plus
This little nugget attaches to your Wii-mote, giving you true 1:1 motion sensing. Meaning? This means the usual gulf between what you are doing in real life and what is happening on screen will no longer exist, which should have happened when the Wii came out 2 years ago. But better late than never.

Wii Sports Resort
Pretty much Wii Sports, except at the beach. Frisbee throwing (with a cute mii-dog to catch it), jet-skiing, and what appears to be plastic sword fighting (?) are featured. A Wii Motion Plus add-on will be included. We imagine that sword fighting game is an effort to get LucasArts to create something similar involving lightsabers, which gamers have been clamoring for since the Wii was introduced.

Animal Crossing Wii
A longtime favorite, Animal Crossing (pictured above) finally comes to the Wii with online play. Now you can check your mail, grow your garden, and sleep just like the Animals do! Again! On the Wii!

Wii Speak
A new peripheral that attaches to the Wii sensor bar, allowing for online voice chat. This was designed specifically with Animal Crossing in mind.

Nintendo Working on New Mario, Zelda, and Pikmin
While they didn't mention it in their press conference or show anything, various sources at Nintendo, including Shigeru Miyamoto, confirmed that they are in fact working on new Mario, Zelda, and Pikmin games for the Wii.

Sony

God of War 3
This was a no-brainer and only a brief pre-rendered scene was shown, but good to know that that it's on the way, though no date was given.

Massive Action Game
It doesn't have a name yet apparently, but Sony has announced a futuristic online game that will allow up to 256 players to try and kill each other.

80G PS3 for $400
Same price, twice as much storage. Decent.

Video Store
Sony has partnered up with several studios to offer movies online starting earlier this week. You can purchase flicks for $15, rent HD movies for $6, or standard def for $4.

Little Big Planet in October
One of the more innovative titles out there, Little Big Planet allows for all sorts of user-created content. It has been pushed back from September.

Home Delayed... Again
Sony's virtual world is heading back to the oven for a bit longer. No date was given.

Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty on PSN
Basically an expansion to R&C Future, Booty will be available for $15 later this summer on PSN, with a hard copy Blu-Ray version to follow.

$200 PSP Bundle
This slipped by us yesterday, but Sony will be releasing a $200 PSP Bundle this fall complete with: Silver PSP, Ratchet & Clank Size Matters, an unnamed UMD movie, a coupon for the downloadable game Echochrome, and a 1GB memory stick.

Third Party News

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars
The long-rumored DS version of GTA was finally acknowledged today, but few details were given, aside from the name and that it would take place in the modern-day Liberty City. Wifi-multiplayer seems inevitable for this one.

Guitar Hero: On Tour Decades
Yet another Guitar Hero for the DS is in the pipe, and though there were few specifics, WiFi file-sharing was mentioned as a possibility. Not sure how this would work, since there is no hard memory in the DS… yet…

Resident Evil 5 Hits PS3 and Xbox 360 in '09
RE5 looks amazing and will feature co-op play. Available in March 2009… Friday the 13th, to be exact.

The new Metallica record, Death Magnetic, for Guitar Hero
Each song will be downloadable for Guitar Hero 3 when the album is released on September 15. It will also be available for Guitar Hero: World Tour when that game hits stores in October.

Lost Planet Movie
Lost Planet, the game about giant bugs on an ice planet, will be written David Hayter (a.k.a. Solid Snake), who wrote the first X-Men movie. Warner Bros. is distributing.

WWE Legends of Wrestlemania
Set in the '80s and early '90s, Legends of Wrestlemania will feature voices and/or likenesses from all the classics like Hogan, Andre, Gorilla Monsoon, Bobby Heenen, etc. No date was given.

Full Rock Band 2 Tracklisting Announced
83 tracks from Billy Idol to Bob Dylan. Fuuuuck.

Dead Rising for Wii
OK technically, this didn't come from E3. It came from a Japanese magazine. Nonetheless, it happened the week of E3, so we're putting it here. No date was given for the Zombies-in-the-Mall classic.

Kiefer Sutherland in Call of Duty: World at War
Jack Bauer will play one of the leads in the next Call of Duty.

Metal Gear Online Expansion Available Now
The first downloadable expansion for Metal Gear Online, which came with MGS4, is now available via PSN! This includes new maps, modes, and characters.

Jade Empire Coming to Xbox Originals
BioWare's kung fu RPG will be downloadable on Xbox Live July 21st for 1200 points.

BioShock PS3 Gets Exclusive Content
"Challenge Rooms" to be added, which are basically puzzle-solving levels. No word on anything else.
