Walter Gibbons, the man responsible for originating the reel-to-reel edit, which gave way to the now ubiquitous art of remixing, is finally being honored for his pioneering work as a DJ and producer with a forthcoming retrospective from compilation and re-issue label Strut. Entitled Jungle Music: Essential & Unreleased Remixes 1976-1986, the double-disc release features early work from Gibbons when he was first allowed access to artists’ multi-track tapes to craft songs from groups like Double Exposure, Salsoul Orchestra, and Gladys Knight into his own, and subsequently release them on his own 12″ records. Other parts of the compilation focus on his work in the ’80s, setting the groundwork for electro and house with mixes for the likes of Strafe, Arthur Russell, and Dinosaur L. Head over here to stay tuned on further developments before the release comes out July 20, and check out the artwork and tracklist below.
