Blue Note Preps Most-Sampled Compilation

You don't have to be a jazz aficionado to have heard of Blue Note Records. Formed in 1939, the label has been both an important landmark in American jazz and also one of the top go-to places for sampling, particularly true where hip-hop is concerned. Jazz icons like Lou Donaldson, Ronnie Foster, and Donald Byrd have, over the years, found their way into tracks by everyone from DJ Krush to Dr. Dre, and whether the kids know it or not, have wielded much influence on hip-hop’s creative geniuses.

WHY? Announces Tour Dates

Anticon's leftfield hip-hop trio WHY? is all over the news these days. As well as keeping busy with the soon-to-be released EP, The Hollows, and a forthcoming full-length (Alopecia, due out March 11), Yoni Wolf and company will also be playing some California dates this month. Wolf is set to open this handful of shows with a couple DJ sets at benefit gigs, and will be joined by bandmates later on in the month.

The Preset's K.I.M. Preps New Single

While we haven't heard much from The Presets since the release of Beams, we do know the Australia-based duo has not fallen off the musical map, as evidenced by "Wet N Wild," a new single from K.I.M (a.k.a. Kimberley Issac Moyes, producer and programmer for the duo).

Rodion Remixed for New Gomma Single

Italio-disco producer and member of the Gomma family Rodion handed his track, "Electric Soca," off his 2007 Romantic Jet Dance album, to a few friends recently, for remixes. The result is a pleasant variety of tunes, all of which deviate stylistically from the slow, sultry original version.

Luke Solomon Preps Rekids Debut

Many folks only associate Luke Solomon with his work in London-based disco-funk band Freaks, but the Classic Recordings co-founder, DJ, and band member is also a ridiculously talented producer. Just listen to the “Ghouls” single on Matt Edwards’ Rekids imprint for proof. And in the spirit of this single, Solomon has also announced his first full-length as a solo artist, The Difference Engine (Rekids).

Pon Di Wire: Ninja Man at Sting Concert, Dennis Brown Releases, Queen Ifrica

Promoters of Jamaica’s notoriously rowdy Sting dancehall concert have promised to keep it peaceful this year. "Last year's Sting was incident-free and we intend to continue that trend," Howard McIntosh of Supreme Promotions commented to Jamaica Observer on Friday. Read more »
