RIP Telefon Tel Aviv's Charlie Cooper

Charlie Cooper, one-half of Telefon Tel Aviv, has passed away at the age 31, it's been reported.

The cause of his death is still unknown, but bandmate and friend Joshua Eustis left the following message on the band's MySpace page.

"It breaks my heart to inform you all that Charlie Cooper, my better half in Telefon Tel Aviv, passed away on January 22.

Come April 7, the boys of Buraka Som Sistema (Lil’ John, Riot and Conductor, and MC Kalaf) will release their kuduro manifesto, Black Diamond. The album's title references corruption in the oil and diamond businesses, subjects that are close to home for BSS.

M83 to Play Solo Performance

Didn't manage to score a ticket to see M83 on his current tour opening for The Killers? Fans, specifically those in New York, have another chance to catch him this month, as the man born Anthony Gonzalez has a solo show planned for January 24 at Irving Plaza.

A rare event, the performance will begin with a set of ambient music and be followed by the set Gonzalez has been playing around the world in support of last year's Saturdays = Youth.

Ruthless City feat. Jeremy Greenspan

Metro Area's Morgan Geist commissioned Junior Boys' Jeremy Greenspan to do vocals for the track "Ruthless City" (off Geist's Double Night Time release), and the result is a warm, nu-disco number that's contrasted sharply by lyrics about fights and blood. The video is a visual reinterpretation of the latter two items, wherein a couple guys assault another man who's minding his own business, carrying the groceries home. Suffice to say, some very bad things happen over the course of the song’s four minutes. Read more »

RIP Clone Records

We know Netherlands-based label Clone for releases from the likes of Dexter, Alden Tyrell, and Legowelt. Sadly, future generations of music heads will not be seeing any new material from this label, as Clone recently announced it will be closing its doors.

Founded by DJ Serge in the late ’90s, the label championed a Dutch music scene that catered to fans of techno, disco, Italo, and what’s often been called “sci-fi electro,” as well as starting a re-issue imprint dubbed Clone Classic Cuts.
