Unreleased Album from Aphex Twin to Be Sold on Kickstarter and eBay
- Words: Patric Fallon
In 1998, iconic UK artist Richard D. James issued a 13-track excursion into the depths of his acid obsession which compiled together four previously released EPs produced under his Caustic Window alias. And though he certainly went on to make loads more music in a similar style, the famously prolific artist never released another record with that moniker. Fans have long hypothesized about the existence of lost albums and unreleased tracks from Aphex Twin and his many projects with nothing to show for it, but it would seem that a previously unheard album from Caustic Window is now going to see the light of day.
Reported on FACT just yesterday, a 1994 test pressing of a record from Aphex Twin's Rephlex label was posted to Discogs with the asking price of $13,500.00. At the time, the validity of the record was uncertain, though its details have since been confirmed, as the owner has teamed up with Rephlex and the We Are the Music Makers forum to organize a Kickstarter which will offer the chance for 500 people to own a digital copy of the album at about $16.00 a pop. Pitchfork points out that the one physical copy of the Caustic Window test pressing will be auctioned off on eBay after the goal of $8,368.00 is met on Kickstarter.
The Kickstarter page has yet to be announced, but further details and photos of the unheard, 16-song double-LP—which appears to feature frequent collaborators Mike Paradinas and Cylob, among others—can be found here, and the related thread on We Are the Music Makers can be perused here. Caustic Window's 1998 Compilation album can be revisited in full via the player below.
UPDATE: April 10, 2014
The Kickstarter campaign is now live and accepting donations. Anyone looking to grab a digital copy of Caustic Window's unreleased CAT023 LP should head here and donate $16.00 or more.
