David August‘s latest single, “The Spell,” is officially released via Ninja Tune‘s Counter Records today.

The single follows on from a standout six months that saw August perform with the 50-piece Berlin Symphonie-Orchester across three sold-out nights in Berlin; headline a live show at London’s KOKO, which sold out in a week; play numerous festival dates all over Europe, including Roskilde and Sonar; and curate a 15 date DJ tour featuring, among others, Leon Vynehall, Axel Boman, and Gerd Janson.

The EP which the single is pulled from, The Spell / A Golden Rush, is a natural progression from its partner EP, J.B.Y. / Ouvert—released in March of this year on Counter—but the completion of the package also signifies a turning point in August’s work, as he explains:

The Spell / A Golden Rush to me personally closes a musical chapter and sets an end to a certain way I have been approaching production and writing music in general… What the future holds will be of a different nature. One I have come to embrace, but have not fully explored yet.”

August marks the end of the chapter in blistering fashion on “The Spell,” molding his dynamic synth work with a groove-led breakbeat framework for close to seven minutes of his subtle magic.

The Spell” can be heard in full below, with the full EP arriving on November 4.
