Major Steinski Career Retrospective Announced

Before there was Coldcut, Cut Chemist, Z-Trip, Kid Koala, Soulwax, or Girl Talk, there was one artist who pushed he boundaries of cut-and-paste urban music, a style that was a precursor to turntablism and mash-ups. New York’s Steve Stein, also know as Steinski, began releasing his influential collage hip-hop 12” singles in 1982-83, and is now the subject of a major double-CD career retrospective, What Does It All Mean?: 1983-2006, which drops May 26 on Illegal Art. Shy Child Announces Live Dates, Bonus Tracks for U.S. Release

Getting booted out of Wesleyan University in the mid-'90s didn't stop Pete Cafarella from remaining friends with Nate Smith. The two eventually located to New York, where they formed Shy Child and released Nose Won't Stop, which will see its U.S. release in May on Kill Rock Stars.

Dosh Announces Fourth Full-Length

Martin Dosh is finally taking time away from his work with Andrew Bird and Co to release his fourth solo album, Wolves and Wishes. The follow-up to 2006's The Lost Take, this new release finds the Minneapolis-based producer with a fresh cast of collaborators, among them Andrew Broder and Mark Erickson of Fog, Mike Lewis, Bad Plus drummer David King, and Bird himself. The whole crew unrolls an album of moody pianos, violins, and soft vocals, with nary a drum machine to be found.

Mighty Crown Claim Second Jamaica World Clash Trophy

Beating out major Jamaican selectors Black Kat and Tony Matterhorn, Japan’s Mighty Crown repeated as champions at Irish & Chin’s eighth annual World Clash Jamaica: Death Before Dishonor event. The dancehall DJ music showcase took place Easter Monday, March 24 in Montego Bay at Pier One. A preliminary event was also featured, the veterans clash, with New York’s Downbeat, Jamaica’s King Jammy, Black Scorpio sounds, and the U.K.’s David Rodigan. Read more »
