For the next installment of the XLR8R podcast, we turn our attention towards the inventive and at times quite bizarre roster over at Sufjan Stevens' Asthmatic Kitty imprint. Founded in 1999 by a collective of like-minded musicians from Michigan, the label has since risen to prominence thanks to the likes of Rafter, Shapes and Sizes, Cryptacize, I Heart Lung, and Stevens himself. Their friendship formed over a mutual love for a Stevie Wonder tune, and Dusk + Blackdown have been DJing and producing music together ever since, rolling out the dubstep and grime beats and generally causing havoc on the dancefloor. Based in London, they also run Keysound Recordings (which is to release the duo's debut long-player Margins Music on August 18), and capture the dark environment of their city through their music. Few in electronic music have achieved the type of legendary status members of The Orb enjoy, and even fewer manage to sustain a consistent momentum once they get there. But Alex Patterson and Co have been pioneers of all things ambient since 1988, dropping a steady stream of releases into the hands of fans, receiving accolades from mainstream publications like Rolling Stone, and even dabbling into minimal techno, a move spearheaded by former member Thomas Fehlmann.

Hailing from Italy, The Bloody Beetroots are currently making gritty music for dirty dance floors worldwide, with performances booked in three different continents over the next few months. Despite a busy schedule of rocking parties and swigging Grappa, the Marvel-masked duo found time to cook up a mini-mix of their latest tracks and remixes for the XLR8R podcast.
