Podcast 137: Ben UFO

The world of electronic music is filled with quirks, but one of the most confusing is the fact that so many DJs only get attention if they also produce tracks. If someone has banged out a quality tune or two—and in some cases, the "quality" requirement is optional—they can quickly find themselves DJing around the globe, regardless of whether or not they are actually any good behind the decks. On the flip side, there are amazing DJs whose talents go unnoticed simply because they've never slapped their name on a song or remix. For a genre where clubs and parties take center stage, it seems like the system has been flipped on its head. Nevertheless, a select few still manage to break through based solely on their DJ skills. That group includes young Ben UFO (a.k.a. Ben Thomson), co-founder of the London-based Hessle Audio label. His top-notch DJ sets, usually combining the freshest funky, garage, and 2-step sounds with a choice selection of classic dubstep, house, and techno, have been blowing minds for a while now, so we are ecstatic to have him curate this edition of the XLR8R podcast.

"Slapped their name on a song or a remix". As if it's that easy. Ben UFO's an exception as he's a label boss, but frankly why would I pay to see someone go and play other people's music. Let's be honest it's not that much of a skill. Also, when you can and see a producer, you can almost guarantee you're going to hear some of their tunes. Hence the attraction. Down with 'big name' DJ's!

its rad that this mix goes from old ny sounding house to very contemporary sounding UK dub step

see the thing is, is that dub step can just sound so serious and house can just sound so fruity, however put them together and its just plain, fun. Also its just so cool when you get that half time snare coming over the 4 on the floor because you know what’s coming up

This is one of the most refreshing mixes I have heard in the series. Carefree and spontaneous. Old school stylee. I must say (@ Anon) that it's such a great disappointment of hearing a great producer you had faith in simply from their production output absolutely eat shit when put on front of some turntables, especially if you're the promoter that was suckered into buying (or someone who paid admission). A great producer does not make a great deejay. But a talented and seasoned deejay does more often make for a great producer. Ben certainly has the knack for deejaying. It's a shame that more people these days can't comprehend the merit of such a virtue and truly talented bona fide deejays have a harder time making a career of that talent alone.
