Podcast 148: Moby's Old-School Rave Mix
- Words: Shawn Reynaldo
It's easy to throw around words like 'legend' and 'pioneer' when talking about electronic music, and let's face it, half the time people won't say boo about these labels, most likely because they don't know who they hell you're talking about. But when it comes to true-blue dance music heavy-hitters, the kinds of artists that even your mom has heard of, it's hard to top Moby. The man has changed a lot since getting his start making high-energy rave tunes in the early '90s, but even as his music has morphed, changed, and, yes, mellowed, it's always been clear that Moby still has a soft spot for that bygone era. Here at XLR8R, we've been itching for someone to do a classic rave mix, so we figured who better than Moby to put together a pumping session full of hyperactive synth stabs, feel-good piano melodies, whooshing hoover sounds, and endlessly pulsing beats. To our delight, he was up for the challenge, and the mix does not disappoint. Listen to the mix—we've had it on repeat since last week—and if you're in the mood for more Moby DJ action, check out his recently released Wait for Me. Remixes! album on Mute, which features a Moby DJ set along with reworkings of songs from his last full-length.

Yes! Temple of Dreams is one of my all time favorite techno songs. Thanks for including it! I remember when it first came out. Yeah, I'm old.

wow, this mix brings me back to my first rave. It was 1993 and I was 15 years old. It was at the Richmond community center. There was a sound system the size of a two story building. There was just one massive room with everyone dancing together. People were in all sorts of crazy costumes. I took e for the first time. Soon I met another teenage girl who was on e to. We made out in the bleachers. She told me. "The beat is like our mothers heart beat, when we were in her womb"
When we left at 11am, people were still dancing.
After that night, I was never the same.

Argh, thanks for making me wish I wasn't born in '93. Trance and contemporary hardcore are both shit compared to this stuff.
Oh, if on youtube, try looking up some of the live Dreamscape recordings, the music's top-notch. (Though the overall sound quality may not be!)

I wish I was a talented enough writer to come up with adjectives like:
"endlessly pulsing beats".
Those are definitely the words of a lifestyle-magazine-writer attempting to say something brilliant about dance music.

Those were the times of pure electronic music for the floor... I still think those times are (and will be) unrivaled by anything else. Electronic music has advanced hugely from those early tunes but those gems from the past can move the feet like nothing else in the world.
Kudos to Moby for this mix :)

Yep, this mix is simply awesome. Raves were something else back then -unity, love, subculture, and cutting edge music. Sydney Aus had an amazing rave scene back then, imported from all the British backpackers. Underground and fun. Bliss.... thanks Moby, some top tunes.
