Podcast 158: DJ Rashad & DJ Spinn

Ever since the news broke that venerable UK label Planet Mu had signed young juke experimentalist DJ Nate, a whole new wave of juke- and footwork-related excitement has taken hold in the music world. When it was later revealed that the label had also snatched up music from fellow Chicago producers DJ Roc and DJ Rashad, the hype reached a whole new level. Admittedly, XLR8R hasn't been immune to all the chatter about this hyperactive sound from the Windy City; our next issue will include an in-depth look at the city's juke scene, we've invited DJ Rashad to headline the next installment of our monthly TURRBOTAX® party this Friday in Brooklyn (alongside live sets from Pictureplane and Ghosts on Tape), and we've also tapped him to put together an exclusive mix for this week's edition of our podcast series. Assembled with the help of his frequent partner DJ Spinn, the mix is a relentless flurry of unreleased tracks, high-speed percussion, and chopped-up vocal samples that's more than likely to break some ankles.

01 DJ Spinn "Blow My Mind"
02 DJ Rashad "Animation"
03 DJ Rashad "Ghost"
04 DJ Manny "All I Do Is (Smoke Trees)"
05 DJ Rashad & DJ Lucky "Love You (Yes I Do)"
06 DJ Spinn "Good Good Ish"
07 DJ Earl "Traffic Stop"
08 DJ Rashad & King AG "We Gon Make It"
09 DJ Spinn "Exhibit G"

jump->shark, has it really gotten to this? Tunes that could be made on a phone? Bottom of the barrel production. I guess we shouldn't be surprised since you bothered to send someone to Gathering of The Juggalos. What's next Justin Beiber/Kanye/Raekwon collab b/w footwurk-juke remix on Incite? Come on XLR8R, let's hear the good stuff. This is a waste of everyone's time. And to Dj Rashad and Spinn, enjoy the ride and save that money mang.

Juke is the new "experimental IDM". Meaning that its random crap and anyone that calls it as such "just doesn't understand it".

I understand it - its' what happens when you fuck around stoned with an MPC, and crank out a track every 5 min.

Waste of everyone's time, and shows that Planet Mu has ceased to be relevant.

XLR8R - give some time to people who give a fuck about what their music sounds like, and actually try to craft something decent.

Any half ass Detroit or Bmore dj can throw down way better than this shit.

Haters start your engines.

As the collective Roger Eberts of haterism, we know it is your solemn duty to get olympic-level butthurt over anything that might potentially be the "next big thing." Let us clue you in. Juke is not a fad here. It's not the next big thing. In parts of Chicago, it's the only thing. Juke has been a way of life around these parts for 20+ years. The fact that a bunch of white academics (to be fair, it takes one to know one...) are catching up with it enough to write about it here doesn't mean it's no good. Rashad and Spinn are doing revolutionary stuff and they still will be when you vultures get to cluckin' on the next trend. God knows you won't be making any actual music yourselves. You're like a bunch of pathetic rejects from the cast of High Fidelity. You're lousy with top 10 lists and opinions, but when the cards are on the table you'll be real lucky if the real musicians will let you maybe DJ a party at the end of the movie.

PS: As a rule, anytime you judgmental snobs start looking down your nose at the music that is moving loads of poor teenagers and creating incredible dance movements like footwork, you're doing dance music wrong. It's about them, not you. They ALWAYS get there first and the best you can hope is to be a witness to it.

This ones for you.

I'm sick of hearing all this talk about juke without any mention of FOOTWORK, the dance that spawned the music. It wouldn't exist if it wasn't for the dancers telling the djs to speed up the music all thru the 90s. All you haters talkin about idm and whatnot prolly haven't actually danced since you were a teenager decades ago. Just pull your hoodie up, cross your arms and clear the floor, cuz while you're by the back bitchin about how the DJ fucked up that last mix cuz I guarantee none of you could keep up with any random teenager from the south side of Chicago who has been dancing double time to 160bpms since they were in diapers.

Lady Foursquare is correct.
(Most of) the rest of y'all could not possibly be more clueless.

FOR INSTANCE: anybody who relates this to IDM has just outed themselves as out of touch with what we're actually talking about, which is urban music in America. It may sound like IDM to your Anglophile frame of reference, but it's a lot closer to steppas, ghettotech, booty bass, chopped & screwed, or (brace yourselves) HOUSE MUSIC than it is to autechre.

FURTHERMORE: Anybody calling Planet Mu irrelevant for picking up on juke reminds me of all the haters who talked shit on Mu for picking up on Dubstep. Yes, Planet Mu is catching on later than some people, but they're ahead of every other big indie in the game, now aren't they? Mike P is (hopefully) gonna be to juke what Neil Rushton was to techno, and I'm ok with that. (PS: If that reference isn't meaningful to you, spend less time talking about music and more time reading/listening).

My only gripe with this mixtape is that Spinn & Rashad don't really show a good sampling of all the different producers and styles happening in juke/footwork right now. It's not representative of the whole scene, but it's still fucking dope, so GET YR EARS ON STRAIGHT PEOPLE

Not so fast. Modern hiphop production has blurred the lines between urban music and electronic music (not just IDM) and anglo styles like jungle and dubstep are very gray which is a beautiful thing.

Let's keep it real. Lots of people are not going to be feeling footwork. It's jarring difficult music. It don't go down easy. That doesn't excuse the ignorant comments, but it's easy to type smack on the internet.

REAL TALK Y'ALL:

If a black producer makes weird, unpolished, raw music, people will accuse him of being a stoner making trax on his phone.

If that same producer takes his music and polishes it—makes it professional, clean, slick—people will accuse him of trying to "whiten" his sound.

But to catch BOTH of those criticisms at the same time? Wow. Way to be douchey, internet

@Dj Tre and all the lemmings out there, I'm tired of shit music. It's not "jarring difficult music", it's badly produced music. It's not that it's ghetto, alot of great music came outta the ghetto (and Chicago!), this just doesn't hold up. The best footwork dancer in the world, doesn't hold a candle to the average breaker. The only thing in common with IDM is that if you don't like Juke/Footwurk, you don't get it , you're clueless-that's an easy way out. Yeah, Chi-Town stand the fuck up! Lots of great producers (not talkin bout Kanye either). Why call out the white "academics"? Another easy way out, this isn't about race-poor white ghetto kids in Europe were dancing the same moves to gabber since thy were in diapers too-to equally bad music. It's not always about hatin on the internet-sometimes you can't take it anymore and call it like you sees it.

There is plenty of terrible juke out there, but there is also plenty of amazing stuff. Give it some time, and you'll figure out how to listen to it. I remember these same criticisms when jungle came out.

At the end of the day, nobody is forcing you to like juke. It's not for everybody. For those that said this is not representative of juke or even representative of Spinn and Rashad, realize this. This is 100% juke, and this is 100% Spinn and Rashad. While most of us are used to hearing more simplistic juke tracks, these funny and odd tracks were what Spinn and Rashad have made out of love and passion for the footwork community. No one thought this music was going to get international exposure, no one thought this music was going to be a road to fame, but they made it out of their love and dedication to the scene they were involved in since the ages of 13. Literally, this music and this scene has been their life for over 20 years now, and no opinion other than the footworkers mattered in the review of their tracks.

The reason they made a footwork mix is simply due to the fact that the world looked like it had finally accepted the music that could only be played in parks, old car shops, karate studios, and old store fronts. With love and support from people like Headhunter, Ramadanman, and the Night Slugs crew, it seemed like the world was waiting to hear a footwork mix that wasn't made over 4 years ago by some teenagers who left the scene because they were never fully accepted by the scene.

It's okay that most people don't like he music, because it's truly something you have to immerse yourself in to understand. Truth be told, I personally couldn't understand the big deal about this music for over 3 Months. But what happened to me is the same thing that happened to everyone I brought around the scene. The power, the beauty, and the beyond complicated rhythmic patterns will eventually blow up in your face.

And for the record, this scene has absolutely nothing to do with IDM, so if you truly perceive the music in that light, I suggest you go to YouTube.com/ghettotekz or YouTube.com/walacam, and see if you can put 2 and 2 together.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong and please excuse me, because I'm going on what has to be at least a 15 year old memory here, but there was an issue of XLR8R, oddly enough, during the period of time when it was a large format magazine (1994?), which I'm sure almost no one even remembers. It had, I believe, Robbie Hardkiss on the cover. While we're not likely to see that day come again, there was an article in that issue that had a headline which was something to the effect of "What is this jungle crap?" The article, if I'm correct, was a debate about the legitimacy of this new music. Of course everyone was complaining that it was fast, frenetic and probably just a fad. The article seems ridiculous now, of course. Jungle and then drum and bass became huge, monolithic forces in electronic music. While neither are at their zenith now, anyone who debates their legitimacy is a garden variety dullard.

And, at the end of the day, why even bother defending juke or footwork. Like everything else Chicago does, you can love it or hate it all you want. The rest of the world is still going to spend the 20 years imitating it.

@truth, who said "The best footwork dancer in the world, doesn't hold a candle to the average breaker." That may be true if the bpms are down low, but any breaker would break their neck trying to do anything at footwork speed.

The footwork style of music (I heard it called ghetto technical when I took a class with King Charles of the FootworKingz) separated from the juke stuff because juke was too rhythmically simple for the dancers. All the changes in the music are driven by what the dance floor demanded.

How many people who aren't from Chicago who profess love for the music have bothered to try to learn how to dance to it? My guess is 0.0001%. It's an incredibly demanding athletic style. I've spent two months training and aint even close to being able to do shit @ full speed. Every one of those people you see on walacam etc has spent countless hours perfecting their craft with a ton of discipline. You can't do it any other way.

The reason footworking will probably never catch on like breaking is because it's actually much more difficult. You can be a half ass breaker really easily, but being a half ass footworker means you can't even keep up with the speed of the music.

If you're not a FOOTWORKER, a fan of the style of dance, the type of tracks these producers make, from the hoods in CHICAGO and was born and raised off this sound you will not understand this music. Yes it's "weird" in it's own way but it's not nothing new and out of nowhere boom here is the next underground electronic music craze. This was next level back then and only footworkers and REAL TRUE lovers of this sound could relate. When a lot of you guys were just getting up on the whole "juke" term and movement (late as hell) these type of tracks were in effect. Yes it's in the ghetto house/juke but this is it's own sound and style of dance "footwork" from DJ's and producers who use to dance or still dance (that's why they know how to make the best soundin footwork tracks). It's not a fad or a brand new "weird" sound as some of you may look at it to be, try 10 years ago this would have been considered "weird" or new juke sound cause thats how long this particular sound been around. Not juke music, footwork tracks, footworkers type of music to dance to.....and to add this and I'm finished..... If you not DJ RASHAD, DJ SPINN, RP BOO, new guys like DJ MANNY and EARL, then you can't make these type of tracks and mix these type tracks right then you ain't official. If you really like this music and listen and know whats up with this music then you're real to this. If you fake with this you won't last cause it will show. I'm sick of you new jack dick riding, capitalizing, no rhythm having ass followers who wanna be down with something you know nothing about. Y'all ain't know about footwork, you all didn't come to the Chi and go to the parties to see this movement or buy the mix cd's of these DJ's who played and made this music. I've been into Chicago sound for a long time. I got the whole DanceMania catalog on vinyl at home and plenty of tapes because tapes are essential in this styles. I've been spinning and throwing parties in Paris and help some young cats starting as DJs.
At that time there was no internet almost, to get new tracks on wax from Chicag owas a complete magical thing.
I am glad to read Lil'tal comment. I met Wax and Jammin Gerald and D-Man and Spinn and Rashad and Trax, I was really impressed to hear talk about music because they are deep into it. And the parties are tight in Chicago from the little I've seen.
And crazy to hear the juke sound because House has evolved complete to a new gendra, which is the best proof that's a step in music.

There's a lot to say about the music, the production, the tools, the sound, the style; I wish people get more educated about music that's all... Some tracks will stay, some won't make it through times. Generation after generation, it's an evolution.

What's funny is that y'all talk all this shit about this sound of music but you don't understand it and you don't know where it comes from and why it's made and who it's made for. It's no problem to have your own opinion cause you're entitled to your own opinion. It's called freedom of speech. I feel like this. Every genre of music and sub genre has it's good and bad music. It's depending on what you like hearing on your ears. Everybody gets hypnotized to music you say that's bad and end up finding yourself liking it the more you hear it. Then you find yourself knowing what's good and what's not. You have your bullshit hip hop/rap, r&b, pop, rock, electronic, ect.... and you have your good music in those genres. If you as me then I'll say 75% of music now days from all genres sounds like shit and this is MY OPINION and I say this because I love to listen to REAL MUSICIANS and REAL SONGS! If you don't know how to play an instrument, song write and compose you're not a musician you're a beat maker, a keyboard pecker and a mouse clicker. I respect REAL artists like Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Michael Jackson, Herb Alpert, Sergio Mendes, Gamble and Huff, Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards, even newer artists like Alicia Keys (she sings, song writes, play piano and produces) Even house music musicians such as Larry Heard and Glenn Underground just to name a couple. My dude Russoul, he's another singer, song writer, piano/keyboard player and producer who reads and writes music and he produces r&b and house. So until we start playing instruments and really doing some serious music then we're getting by with the music we're doing. We need to say thanks to the 80's electronics makers because of drum machines and synthesizers made us be able to make these sub genres (electro, juke, techno, house, dnb, ect..) of music today. Fuck y'all haters cause I like juke and footwork tracks! Keep hatin' and Spinn and Rashad keep doing what y'all do best!

@Truth "how ironic" that you use "Truth" as your handle when you spout such a fucking load of hypocracy. You say Juke/Footwork is not ready for prime time, citing that uZiq said it has only been around a couple of years. In fact uZiq said that HE HEARD IT first in 2008 - referring not to "juke/footwork" (your quote), which has in fact been around since the 1990's, but to the darker, arhythmic aspects of DJ Nate and his contemporaries. Then you advise "Jungle/Drum and Bass produced from 91-95" -- the absolute beginning moments of that genre, oh wait, I thought music is "bad" unil it's been around long enough to be "ready for prime time".

You name drop forward thinking artists like J Dilla, Neil Landstrum and Anti-Pop Consortium. Dude. You call yourself a "producer"? You can't even IMAGINE yourself producing music like those people if you don't have an open mind and a willingness to learn. The fact alone that you repeatedly post on here that this mix is -- "bad", discredits you entirely. You are just a frustrated kid looking to get a rise out of people. How can music be "bad"? You think Buddy Rich was "good". Why? Because he could play one-handed rolls? You don't get this music. I don't get psytrance. I know producers who make it and DJ's who spin it. Am I going to tell them it's bad? Not on your fucking life. It's not FOR me. And footwork ain't FOR you.

I can totally tell the critics from the music makers on here. Most guys making music have great appreciation for ANYTHING. Seriously, this is going to be a gold mine for anyone who has never heard it, the same way bmore beats and breaks made its way, Baile beats, kuduro, cumbia, bounce, At SXSW I heard Tamiel and Tim Dolla dropping dubstep with bmore beats, Munchi is making moombahcore, combining everything with everything, you can hear Juke - step, people pushing dub wobbles to 160 bpms with the classic juke toms.
Every time music changes it gets criticized, thank god for people who still have the guts to push the envelope. PROPS TO RASHAD/SPINN and all of Chicago. Can't wait When that Maddecent video comes out of Rashad doing his thing @ our block party.

Truth (not verified) Wrote

@Tre, you asked what music I listened to, I answered. I'll be in Chicago, maybe end up next you someday and neither of us will ever know it-I calls it like I hears it. @Skweelicious uZiq and I are referring to what he called "bedroom juke" which is a perfect name for this. Alot of the og Drum and Bass producers were already producing for years when Jungle/ DnB developed-and it shows in their production. I referenced that and all the other stuff because Juke/Footwork contains different elements of each. Bedroom Juke isn't forward thinking, it's lazy and I'm calling for all it's reps to step their game up. I'm willing to bet I have the most open mind outta anyone whose comments so far. Don't hate me for speaking up for something I (and a few other people) felt needed to be said. I'm looking to get a rise outta people, yeah-my purpose is to get people to question this mess and uphold some kind of standard. Buddy Rich was one of the dopest drummers that ever lived, one handed rolls is the tip of the iceberg-you don't think that dude could tear it up? I've been a dj for 15 years, from personal experience and hearing djs from all sorts of genres-by those standards-this mix SUX. BTW, I don't get psytrance either. Also, if you're not a DJ, don't call yourself one. I think mixtapes should all have blends in them (including hip-hop/drum and bass).

Conclusion:
I've said all I can say really, I think I've made my point. I'm done with all the negativity from my end. Thanks to all who took the time to explain what this is going for. Maybe you just got to be there to get it. I hope all the producers who are into this music so much take that energy and put it into honing their craft (like I've said over and over again). The dancers, the people who up you, deserve it. This has been a fun and interesting discussion but I'm off to enjoy Labor Day weekend and the rest of my life.

PEACE

@truthboy no holmes, "lazy" isn't cutting a mix that is turning on dancers, DJ's, producers, journalists, and the dance music world like nothing else has since time. lazy is sitting at your computer and telling the DJ's and producers involved they need to "step up their game". that's brilliant einstein, ravi shankar needs to step up his game, music has no limits. i already called you out for name checking jungle from '91 when it hadn't had 5 minutes to "step up its game" and all you got is some of the producers had been producing for years before. well some of the cats on this mix have been producing for the better part of 20 years. and that's not even what it's about, i'm just pointing out the fact that you got nothing.

Go take a look at his year of mixtapes blog if you want to get a sense of the depth and breadth of his skill. He's an iconoclast, scholar and incredibly gifted producer and DJ, who is comfortable in more genres than almost anyone I've encountered in my 20 years in dance music. He's been in dance music since he was about 11 years old and I assure you, if nothing else, he does whatever the fuck he wants musically whether anyone else is interested in it or not, probably to his detriment honestly.

Second, I manage outright, A+R or, at the very least, distribute over 50 labels, most of which are Chicago based and which include everyone from Trax Records, Ghetto Division and the entire Dust Traxx group. But please, why don't you tell me what is going on in Chicago right now instead, because we were to busy paying attention to this to notice: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RktckbpX6JQ

OK first of all to the haters this is a footwork mix and footwork is made for the dancers apparently its not mainstream radio top forty bullshit your used to!!!! Footwork is not all these multi-talented Producers/Djs do. As a matter fact footwork was not what i was orginally attracted to. I was attracted to the Juke music that was more radio friendly aka commercial type shit. That being said this mix is raw and is only a small sample of what they are capable of. Ive been following them for awhile now amd I must say the music keeps getting better and better. So to you haters before you pass judgement I suggest do your research before you open your fuckin mouth. Ive seen these guys in the D, the Chi and Indy. They dont just get high and threw traks together. They mix there music with house, ghetto tech, disco, rap, r&b basically anything fucking hot. These guys be Jukin with all the varities. Juke is what caught my attention, when I heard it for the first time I couldn't help but shake my ass. You should have seen the crowd at DEMF when Rashad went on nobody was standing still. Everybody was Jukin and screaming. They know how to get crowd jumpin. But by all means dont think that Footwork is all they do. I must tell you that everytime I have seen them no matter where they crowd always loves the music they play. So to Rashad and Spinn I say keep doin what your doin cause we love it out here in the D!!!!

Thanks Rashad and Dj Spinn for the mix and everybody that "fuck around stoned with an MPC, and crank out a track every 5 min" ... gotta thank them for Hip Hop, House Music, Garage, electrónica or whatever new stuff since Barry Manilow. Each of those are little steps in making music go FORWARD.

the shit is lame, you can't convince me otherwise. calling others a 'hater' is just your hilariously dumb way of defending your ego against the fact that you have no taste. just come to terms with how shitty your brain is working if you think this is good.

i am guessing that you don't live in or around the chicago area. i am also guessing that you are an arrogant person who prides themselves on being ahead of trends, etc. good job on being such a smartie. i am actually thankful that you don't feel the music because i would be embarassed to produce music that you considered quality.

it is utterly ignorant to tell anyone 'this is stupid. you can't convince me that it isnt and if you like it you are dumb.' ALL THAT IS YOUR OPINION. why don't you take your (anonymous) opinion and shove it up your ass. preemptively telling me that the way i respond better not be dumb (in defense of my ego) is the most insulting thing of all.

go be negative somewhere else, no body cares if you like the mix or not...i only said something because you wasted my time by posting your ignorant ass shit.

go listen and produce to some idm or some other shit that you can't dance to.

stand up CHICAGO!!!

I've been djing in the uk for about 5 years; recently started dropping a few rashad tracks into sets and from a dj's perspective its pretty much cheating - always guaranteed to destroy pretty much any dancefloor. who gives a fuck if its simple and doesn't sound like years have been spent on the mixdown or whatever, the vibe is right and the job gets done where it matters, in the club. props to rashad and spinn!

Footworking is a dance style first. You wont fully enjoy the music until you learn how to footwork. Those crazy syncopations are not IDM programming tricks, they match body movements and hits. There are a few footwork tuts on youtube and a couple of the Footwork Kingz that toured with Madonna have recently done a week long workshop in Chi for out of town hedz. Its not that hard to learn if you already know similar african american footwork stlyes like hip hop, salsa, swing, tap, house, or jit.

I've was and am still in Chicago wen juke or ghetto tracks were first moving around. I danced and collected this music, so I can speak first hand that it's about dancing. Yeah listening, but you need to get your dance on. So just because you hate it, you don't have to broadcast it. I hate lots of music but I just keep it to myself. This is the next wave of Chicago djs playing and producing juke. I am just amazed that the kick drum has been taking out, and repeated with with sparse toms and snares. For the record still dancing in my 30's.
