Podcast 300: Maya Jane Coles

The XLR8R podcast series is nearly seven years old. During that time, the entire concept of podcasts has become ubiquitous; at times, it feels like just about everyone on the planet with an internet connection has one. Still, we've held fast to a simple concept: each week, we ask a DJ put together an exclusive mix, which we then post on XLR8R for our readers to stream and/or download. There's nothing overly complex about it, and the podcast doesn't come with many bells and whistles, yet the series has nevertheless become one of the cornerstones of our website, something that thousands of people flock to week in and week out. Last month, we featured a special series of mixes in celebration of XLR8R's 20th anniversary, and today we've arrived at another milestone: podcast number 300. Podcast 299: Octo Octa

Octo Octa (a.k.a. Michael Bouldry-Morrison) wasn't the first artist to release music on the 100% Silk label, but he's certainly one of the best. Over the past two years, the Brooklyn producer has released a number of records via the fashionable imprint, the most recent of which is Between Two Selves. Though his music is clearly inspired by vintage house sounds, Octo Octa offers more than simple retreads; there's a streamlined sensibility to his work, and though he's not making pop music per se, he shows a real talent for employing subtly sticky hooks within a dancefloor framework. We're not the only ones who've taken notice of Octo Octa's skills, as he recently wrapped up his time as a participant at Red Bull Music Academy in New York and immediately followed it up with a tour of Australia. Podcast 298: Peverelist

There's something special about Bristol. The UK city has consistently been a hotbed for new electronic sounds over the past two decades, and more importantly, it's a place where the scene marches to the beat of its own drum (or perhaps we should say drum patterns), offering music that is simultaneously highly innovative and intensely local. This tendency is certainly true of Peverelist (a.k.a. Tom Ford), along with the small cadre of artists and labels that have sprung up around him since the mid '00s. Read more »

All month long, XLR8R has been celebrating its 20th anniversary with a special series of podcasts from a select crew of musical luminaries, all of who cast a long shadow over the past two decades of electronic music. With that in mind, we've enlisted legendary NYC outfit Masters at Work to close out the series, as it's hard to name an act that's had a greater impact during the last 20 years. Read more » 

Podcast 296: Stacey Pullen

XLR8R got started back in 1993, right around the time that Stacey Pullen began releasing records. Given our parallel trajectories, it makes sense that we'd enlist the Detroit stalwart to put together a mix as part of our month-long 20th anniversary celebration. A key member of Detroit techno's second wave, Pullen came up under the tutelage of Motor City pioneers like Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, but quickly made his own mark, particularly once he hit the global DJ circuit in '93 and '94. Since then, he's been a fixture behind the decks in clubs around the globe, and has spent the past two decades spreading the gospel of Detroit. Read more »

Last week, we here at XLR8R kicked off a month-long series of special podcasts to commemorate our 20 years of existence. Obviously, a lot of music has come and gone in the last two decades, so we figured the best way to celebrate our own little milestone would be to highlight a few of the artists whose output has helped define the era. Believe it or not, XLR8R recently celebrated its 20th birthday. It's not an occasion we've been hyping with lots of fanfare—perhaps we're getting a bit shy about our advancing age—but we figured that we needed to do something to commemorate our two decades of existence. Ultimately, we decided to recognize the milestone via our podcast series.
