Sunny Levine Love Rhino

The "love" part of this album's title is obvious, but the "rhino" might need some explanation. Singer-songwriter Sunny Levine wrote these songs after a failed relationship, hence the rhino metaphor: He's a tough-skinned creature who keeps on keepin' on. Though Levine has produced for a range of artists (Pete Yorn, Hugh Masekela) and comes from a musical family (Quincy Jones is his grandfather), this disc, his debut full-length, lacks depth, with stunningly dull lyrics straight from your seventh-grade journal. His idiosyncratic rock, mixing organic and electronic elements, isn't strong enough to make up for his lack of perspective or his pedestrian writing. As a producer, he's an old hand, but as a musician, he just sounds immature.

please ignore this review. this person doesn't have a clue. "stunningly dull lyrics" really? i guess i couldn't tell under all the hooks. i mean this cat has hooks for days. he could sing the phone book and i'd listen. his phrasing is flawless and humble. these are melodies plucked from the collective consciousness, and feel like old friends. this is one of the only records i've heard in years that i would even recommend to anyone. it has barely left my cd player for the last 6 months. i have very selective taste. i usually only listen to classics like, Miles, Can, Funkadelic, Eno. i don't spin bullshit records that get great reviews in Pitchfork and the like. I'd rather shoot myself in the face than listen to a buzz band like Vampire Weekend, Yeasayer or the Black Keys. do yourself a favor, if you love beautiful music, Buy This Record!

Lopez needs to listen to some real music and get a grip. And the comment about the lyrics is so off. I listen to the classics, only shit that will endure. And my boy Sunny got the goods! This is a great record. Check it out.
