Dial’s 40th release reminds me why I have become vaguely obsessed by the Hamburg-based rekordaufkleber: The vinyl-only compilation starts with a tribute to the Motor City and ends with a track that reminds of no one so much as English singer Jake Thackray. Providing the collection with its name, the closing Phantomghost oddity is actually a cover of “You Are My Mate” by British novelty act Right Said Fred, who curiously had a hit with the track in Germany. Jost & Klemann’s “CC01 (Detroit),” meanwhile, is a self-explanatory homage that is as cool and precise as it is affectionate. In between these extremities are deep house and ambient contributions from label illuminati like Sten, Pantha du Prince and Pigon that are utterly lovely. Nice monochromatic sleeve, too.
