The forthcoming LP will also include collaborations with Four Tet and Romy Madley Croft of The xx.

The gentle, vocal-led "Battle," and its odd, parking lot-based video, can be streamed below prior to the release of Herbert's The Shakes LP on May 29 via Caroline International.

Until now the identity of the track's producer has been something of a secret, but the Numbers label has today revealed it to be none other than Adesse Versions. The Glasgow label will duly release Adesse Versions' "Pride" on a 12" of the same name on March 31, and ahead of that the label has shared a full stream of the record's title track, which can be found below along with the upcoming record's complete tracklist.

Adesse Versions, and presumably a rather prominent airing for "Pride", can also be heard on Numbers' home turf of Glasgow this Saturday when he guests at the Notsosilent party (which—in the interest of full disclosure—we should point out is partially run by XLR8R contributor Ray Philp) at La Cheetah.

On EP cut "On the Surface of the Sea," the pair puts together a brisk electronic excursion, one filled with sweeping chords and topped off by a revolving series of airy melodic adornments—the reverb-bathed tom fills that join the track's final push are a nice touch too. The Korean outfit's Promised Land EP will see its official release on April 7; in the meantime, Cumeo Project's "On the Surface of the Sea" production can be grabbed below.

The high-concept Decon/Recon project is intended to explore a new way of remixing that takes "the hierarchy between the original artist and remixer" found in traditional remixes out of the equation, instead "placing all remixers and composers of parts on equal footing and as part of a composing collective." To that end, the project includes four contributors; on Decon/Recon #1 these are Oni Ayhun (an alias of The Knife co-founder Olof Dreijer), Jam Rostron (a.k.a. Planningtorock) appearing under her new Aquarian Jugs alias, rRoxymore, and Temple herself appearing under her Jaguar Woman alias. For the release, each artist has contributed components of a track into a common archive, and then have worked together to "reconstruct" the parts into individual productions.

The resulting tracks will then be presented without noting who was responsible for each one, in order to, as the press release explains, "put identity into a crisis by giving a collective authoriality." Decon/Recon will also involve a few showcase events, with all four artists appearing together on April 30 at the Donau Festival in Austria, and then again on June 19 at Arena in Berlin. Noise Manifesto will release Decon/Recon #1 on April 20 in limited-edition vinyl and digital formats; in the meantime, the EP's artwork and tracklist can be found below.

Enlisting previously released works from the likes of HNNY, Bicep, Dusky, and Urulu, among others, in its run, the 16-track collection also included a handful of exclusive new productions, including one from Berlin transplant Steve Huerta. A former Los Angeles resident, Huerta's "RomComCrime" track serves as the mix's closing effort, and here—appearing in its "ReDub" form—the tune takes shapes as a deep, rolling house affair, one streaked with dubby, aqua-tinged chords and held together by an active sub-bassline.

It would seem that the London artist has also been able to fit in a good deal of studio time between her extensive travels as she has announced plans to release a new EP later this year which will include a new production entitled "Glass & Patron."

While few details have emerged for FKA Twigs' new EP (other than that it is forthcoming), a video for the record's lead single, "Glass & Patron" has surfaced today. Directed by FKA Twigs, the provocative track's visual accompaniment includes a slew of colorful ensembles, a runway in the woods, and a new glimpse at the artist's unique—at times almost otherworldly—dance moves. Presented as part of the YouTube Music Awards, the full video for "Glass & Patron" can be watched below.

Premiere: Stream a New Single from Maribou State's Upcoming Debut LP http://www.xlr8r.com/news/2015/03/premiere-stream-a-new-single-from-maribou-states-upcoming-debut-lp/ http://www.xlr8r.com/news/2015/03/premiere-stream-a-new-single-from-maribou-states-upcoming-debut-lp/#comments Mon, 23 Mar 2015 16:29:41 +0000 http://www.xlr8r.com/?p=88652 This June, ascendant London pair Maribou State will release its debut long-player, Portraits, via the Counter imprint (an offshoot of Ninja Tune). After sharing the record's lead single, "Rituals," a few weeks back, the production outfit has returned with its forthcoming LP's second single, "Raincoats."

Spanning just under five minutes, "Raincoats" finds Maribou State keen to continue fusing together the worlds of emotive electronic production and live instrumentation, as rising organ chords and reverberant guitar lines are met by re-pitched vocal samples and sparse, marching rhythms. Throughout the track, the pair also builds rich layers of sonic atmosphere which help give "Raincoats" a hypnotic feel, even as its drum work picks up the pace in the tune's second half.

Maribou State's Portraits LP is slated to arrive on June 1 via the Counter label; in the meantime, album cut "Raincoats" is streaming in full below ("Raincoats" is also available on the duo's Rituals 12", out today). In addition, the dates for the pair's upcoming North American DJ tour have also been included below.

The Providence-based producer—who we profiled last year as part of our Bubblin' Up series—cut his teeth in the local noise scene before moving into DIY analog techno. His debut album, LP, was released on Spectrum Spools in 2011, and in the years since he's turned out EPs for Liberation Technologies and Morphine. His latest effort, also titled LP, is described as "architecturally dextrous and club-minded" and "the most explosive offering in the Container oeuvre, capturing the raw and unhinged essence of the live Container experience while exploring new compositional and sonic limits." Lead track "Eject" sets the tone and can be streamed below, where the record's complete tracklist has also been included;  LP is due out on June 8.

Surfing "Warlock" http://www.xlr8r.com/mp3/2015/03/surfing-warlock/ http://www.xlr8r.com/mp3/2015/03/surfing-warlock/#comments Mon, 23 Mar 2015 16:00:55 +0000 http://www.xlr8r.com/?p=88619 Surfing is a somewhat deceiving title for NYC producer Peter Segerstrom's new project. Also known to operate as Portable Sunsets, Segerstrom's upcoming LP for 1080p sees him crafting tracks akin to "a claustrophobic slow motion drag through the inside of a drum machine, where echos of Dancemania, Thomas Brinkmann, DJ Assault, DNA, Early Steve Reich tape pieces, Glossolalia, DJ Funk, and science fiction vibes ring out," according to the label's press release. Pulled from Surfing's self-titled record, "Warlock" embodies that description; built atop a static-lined base of thick kicks and sturdy snares, the tune loops its titular phrase over and over before eventually teasing a bouncing synth sequence out from behind the production's full-bodied rhythms. In other words, Surfing's track has absolutely nothing to do with the beach. "Warlock" can be grabbed below before Segerstrom's full Surfing album drops in cassette and digital form via 1080p on April 7.

The forthcoming record won't see its official release until March 31, but all eight tracks have now been made available to stream in full. "I want[ed] to allow things to breathe and develop gradually over longer track lengths, rather than cram everything into four or five minutes," the London producer says of the record, which reportedly escorts listeners "down misty corridors lined with supple synth pads, quietly thumping kicks, and elastic low-end sequences reinforced by an emotive confidence." More complete details of Insides are posted here, and the album can be streamed in its entirety below courtesy of Hype Machine.

Kero) have teamed up on a sophomore collaborative record, this time for Azad's own Detroit Underground label. Entitled TWO, the EP follows from the duo's "Zug Island" b/w "K2 Attack" single, which was billed as "toxic, dubbed-out neo acid" and issued via Hall's Wild Oats imprint back in 2012. This upcoming effort is said to "reflect contemporary electronic music's current fascination with outsider production [and] 1980s wave music, while still delivering a pulsing and relentless dancefloor beat" and will see a vinyl release within the next few days, with a digital version becoming available next week. The release also heralds the start of a partnership between Detroit Underground and design studio The Designer's Republic, which has been tasked with making a series of limited-edition 7" and 12" screenprinted sleeves for upcoming label releases. Effy "Lumin" http://www.xlr8r.com/mp3/2015/03/effy-lumin/ http://www.xlr8r.com/mp3/2015/03/effy-lumin/#comments Mon, 23 Mar 2015 13:00:47 +0000 http://www.xlr8r.com/?p=88614 On the forthcoming Fernweh EP, Irish producer Effy is said to be found transitioning from more bass-focused club tracks to a darker techno sound. If "Lumin" is any indication, Effy may be even more at home when crafting pummeling techno fare. One of four tracks included on Fernweh, "Lumin" is a charging affair directly out of the gate, placing chugging machine tones underneath a pumping four-on-the-floor and an array of reverb-washed chord stabs. "Lumin" can be grabbed below, where Effy's forthcoming Fernweh EP—which includes a remix from Manni Dee and is set to on March 30 via London's No Logo label—can also be previewed.

Manse has previously appeared on the label (as well as outposts such as Opal Tapes), and his upcoming return is said to find him "drawing on more leftfield tropes while seemingly stitching the elements together as they rattle along." Hedge Maze's Lobster Theremin debut, meanwhile, is said to showcase "a tightly crafted, hazy, blissed-out house sound... culled from the muggy undergrowth of his northern hard drive." Both EPs are set to land on April 10 and can be previewed below ahead of their release.

Spanning five minutes, the track wraps a steady stream of jagged rhythms with thick sheets of cavernous melodies and sunken synth tones, leaving plenty of space to sneak in the occasional muffled vocal sample. Much like an artisanal-minded shopper at the farmer’s market, we’ll be giving you our pick of the finest throwdowns from across the country and around the globe. To that end, we’ll be kicking this new venture off with six of our absolute favorite fests, each of which offers a unique approach to music and art ranging from the experimental to the party-worthy: Lyon's Nuits Sonores, Detroit's Movement, Montreal's MUTEK, Amsterdam’s Dekmantel, Seattle’s Decibel, and an auspicious addition to the Montreal calendar, the all-new AIM affair. And if you’d like to have your event considered for inclusion, send an e-mail to events@xlr8r.com.

Nuits Sonores

Sure, April in Paris has a certain ring to it, but for five days in mid-May, Lyon is the place to be for lovers of electronic music and digital culture. That’s when the long-running Nuits Sonores, founded in 2003, takes over the city, commandeering more than 40 venues that include everything from art galleries to disused industrial sites, and from rooftops to swimming pools. It’s a sprawling affair, with 80,000 attendees coming each year for the fest’s innovative sights and sounds—and a look at the lineup for the upcoming edition, which runs from May 13th through the 17th, helps to explain the appeal. Pioneers like Laurent Garnier, the Orb, and Goldie vie for attention with such of-the-moment artists as Kelele, Factory Floor, Lena Willikens and DJ Qu; dancefloor faves along the lines of Ben Klock, Tale of Us and Âme go toe to toe with sonic outliers like Jon Hopkins, Nils Frahm and Awesome Tapes From Africa. Add in the multitude of multidisciplinary spread throughout the city, and you’ve got yourself something truly special. Bruce Tantum

Detroit might not be the most glamorous metropolis in the world, but the city has one very big thing going for it: Its musical history is as rich as it comes. From the jazz and blues of its Black Bottom neighborhood, through the emotion-soaked soul of Motown and the cosmic grooves of Parliament-Funkadelic, to the jam-kicking punch of the MC5 and the Stooges, Detroit has long shown a aural sensibility that outshines 99 percent of towns twice its size. For three decades, one of the sounds that’s had the world cocking an ear toward Detroit is techno, so it shouldn’t be surprising that one of the world’s leading celebrations of electronic music takes place in the Motor City. This coming Memorial Day weekend, from May 23rd through the 25th, that blowout—the annual Movement festival—takes over downtown Detroit’s Hart Plaza, nestled alongside the Detroit River. As usual, the massive lineup leans heavily on the inner core and outer limits of electronic music, with the fest's five stages presenting a mind-blowing mix of hometown heroes, visiting grandmasters, veterans, and up-and-comers—along, this year, with a handful of hip-hop icons, including Method Man, People Under the Stairs, and in his DJ Snoopadelic guise, Snoop Dogg. Boom! Bruce Tantum

Now in its 16th year of operation, 2015 installment of the Montreal electronic-music-and-digital-arts extravaganza known as MUTEK takes place in from May 27 through May 31. Over the years, the festival has blossomed into a global operation, with affiliate editions occurring in Mexico City, Barcelona, and Bogotá—but Montreal is still the festival’s home, home, a point borne out strength of its home-town lineup. The festival's first-announced round of headliners, all of which are performing live, is split between dancefloor-oriented fare, like Lucy, Steffi, and Atom™ with long-time collaborator Tobias, and headier, cerebral material, like Kiasmos, a collaboration between Ólafur Arnalds and Janus Rasmussen, and Pole performing a special A/V ballet-inspired set alongside visual artist MFO. This balancing act—between the body and the mind, the club and the concert hall—is part of what makes the festival so special; there's no shortage of top-notch partying to be had at MUTEK, but the seated theatrical showcases (and the many collaborations with and exhibitions by digital artists from around the globe) set it apart. And there’s this to consider: Festivals live and die by their host cities, and it's hard to ask for more from Montréal at the end of May as it awakens from a long winter. Affordable, easily navigable, and diverse in architecture, language, and population, the city teems with public art, good eats, and a host of extracurricular activities. Chris Zaldua

Given the sterling reputation Dekmantel Festival has built up, it can be all too easy to forget that the event will turn a mere three years of age this summer. Taking place in the lush surroundings of the Amsterdamse Bos, the whole affair is relatively intimate by modern festival standards—and Dekmantel is undoubtedly all the better for it. Last year’s lineup spanned five stages and didn’t have an ounce of fat on it, leading to an embarrassment of riches each day and the good-problem-to-have of rapid sprints between stages to catch everyone you wanted to see. This year’s edition will feature Manuel Göttsching and Autechre (both performing live at the festival’s opening event), Clark, Ben UFO, I-F, and Shed, among others, as well as an expansion into a new night program. Those saddened Trouw's closure at the beginning of the year will be placated by Dekmantel's nocturnal venture into Melkweg, with guests yet to be announced. Chris Duncan

For the past 11 years, Seattle’s Decibel Festival has provided a distinctive, highly immersive experience that sits at the crossroads between live electronic music and visual arts. Originally the vision of Detroit native Sean Horton, the largely volunteer-run festival takes place in September and has grown from 2,500 participants in 2004, to nearly ten times that in 2014. Spread over five days, Decibel takes place in intimate venues scattered throughout Seattle’s centralized neighborhoods. Musically, Decibel runs the gamut between cutting edge and veteran acts, with Kode9, Rone, Andy Stott, FaltyDL, John Roberts and Efdemin just a few of the artists to play 2014’s edition. In addition to purely musical performances, Decibel features a series of hybrid audio-visual events under the name Optical; last year’s edition was housed in Seattle’s EMP (Experience Music Project) center, affording collaborating artists—such as Arca and Jesse Kanda, and Oneohtrix Point Never and Nate Boyce—access to a 66’x33’ high-definition screen to project mixed media. The final ingredient is the dB Conference, offering free audio/visual workshops, panel discussions, artist talks and more. Decibel’s 2015 lineup still has yet to be released, but you can check out our review of last year’s edition here. Melkorka Licea

With summertime’s festival agenda becoming ever more packed, it’s increasing difficult for a new entry to stand out from the pack—but we have a feeling that Quebec’s Art Innovation Movement (AIM for short) will have no problem in breaking through at its inaugural edition, which runs from June 26th to 28th. First of all, there’s the locale: AIM will be at Carillon Park in St-André- d’Argenteuil, at a beautiful waterfront site about 45 minutes outside of Montreal. Second, there’s the lineup itself, which ranges from the ridiculously fun (Wolf + Lamb, Paranoid London, and local boy made good Tiga) to the absolutely sublime (Jamie xx, house hero Kerri Chandler, DJ Three, and, performing live, Isolée)—not to mention the Martinez Brothers, Chaim, Alexi Delano and other heavyweight talents. And here’s an added bonus for the hardcore among us: AIM will be offering nonstop music for more than 32 hours, from Saturday morning through Sunday night. Sleep’s vastly overrated anyway, right? Ahnnu) back to the fold next month with a new 10-track album. Entitled Perception, the record appears to find Jackson further stripping away the traditional rhythmic structures of his past beat-rooted productions in exchange for exploratory ambient compositions, a direction he successfully pushed his craft on his past Leaving effort, 2013's World Music.

Set to see a limited cassette and digital release on April 7, Ahnnu's Perception album is preceded by the record's first single, "The Racer," a cosmic sonic collage that can be streamed in full below.

Among the noteworthy names on the new round of announcements are Anthony Naples (who recently issued his debut LP via Four Tet's Text label, and is pictured above), L.I.E.S. affiliates Gunnar Haslam (a former XLR8R podcast contributor) and Svengalighost, Brooklyn producer Patricia, British sound sculptor Karen Gwyer, and 1080p associates Perfume Advert. Also joining the bill is Opal Tapes label head Stephen Bishop, who will deliver a set under his Basic House moniker during the course of the festival.

Black Suede "Purgatory" http://www.xlr8r.com/mp3/2015/03/black-suede-purgatory/ http://www.xlr8r.com/mp3/2015/03/black-suede-purgatory/#comments Thu, 19 Mar 2015 16:00:36 +0000 http://www.xlr8r.com/?p=88474 Over the past year, Stefan Ringer has quietly become one of Atlanta's most reliable rising producers. Delivering records under his own name as well as his REKchampa moniker for labels such as somethinksounds' The Love Below offshoot, cassette label Harsh Riddims, and fellow Atlanta producer Kai Alcé's NDATL imprint last year, Ringer returns this month with the four-track Inner Monologue EP, which finds him operating as Black Suede. Under the guise, Ringer runs his soulful production style through a darker tint, such as on EP closer "Purgatory," a murky house effort that methodically carves a path through sludgy low-end and noisy loops while leaving enough space in the high-end for some sparse vocals. One of four-tracks included on Inner Monologue (though the record's digital version does have an additional bonus cut), Black Suede's "Purgatory" can be grabbed below, where a full stream of the man's new EP for the Atlanta-based CGI label can also be found.
