Today, the third and final episode of Relics of the Past has arrived. Catching up with Legowelt and Burns after they have returned from being abducted by an alien creature of some sort, the oddball series' final episode sees the pair jam out on their synths before heading to the streets to sling "space weed," be chased by an alien robot, and help the series' resident professor/gardner launch an "AI" network.

The third and final episode of Relics of the Past can be watched below; for those who need to catch up, the first two episodes of the series can be watched here and here.

Check Out New Mixes from Anthony Naples and Palms Trax http://www.xlr8r.com/news/2015/02/check-out-new-mixes-from-anthony-naples-and-palms-trax/ http://www.xlr8r.com/news/2015/02/check-out-new-mixes-from-anthony-naples-and-palms-trax/#comments Mon, 16 Feb 2015 17:30:35 +0000 http://www.xlr8r.com/?p=86699 Of the wave of new mixes to be shared in cyberspace today, those from Stateside producer/DJ Anthony Naples (pictured above) and Berlin-based Brit Palms Trax have particularly caught our ear.

First, in anticipation of his forthcoming debut LP for Four Tet's Text label, Body Pill (which is set to arrive tomorrow), Anthony Naples has been enlisted to deliver a new mix for Resident Advisor's ongoing podcast series. Beginning with selections from Led Zepplin and Terry Riley, Naples' effort is said to "build with the crispy house and techno bangers Naples is known for" before dipping into more funky territory as the 75-minute set comes to a close. Naples' full RA mix can be streamed and downloaded here; a complete tracklist has not been shared at this time, though RA's comments section has so far done a pretty good job of filling in the gaps.

Secondly, following closing behind last week's announcement of his upcoming EP for Amsterdam label Dekmantel, rising Berlin producer Palms Trax has been tapped to deliver a new mix for the outpost's fledgling series. An hour-long session, the mix focuses on an array of tropical and soul-burnt dancefloor cuts, keeping the groove steady for most all of its run. Also appearing without a tracklist, Palms Trax's Dekmantel 005 mix can be streamed and downloaded in full below.

While the LA-based techno veteran and Underground Resistance affiliate has put out numerous 12"s over the years, many of them appearing on his own imprints (he runs Historia y Violencia with Silent Servant, Ican with Esteban Adame, and the Major People label), the forthcoming Chicanismo LP will serve as Salazar's debut full-length release. According to Resident Advisor, the album is based off "the whole life experience of being a Chicano in Los Angeles that's into dance music," and is officially due out on May 19 via Love What You Feel, an imprint under the umbrella of Pittsburgh Track Authority's Machine Age label group. Album previews have yet to surface, but both the record's artwork and tracklist can be found below.

Amongst Volume 3's efforts is this remix from Barcelona talent Usmev, who takes on longtime Oslo-based production pair Trulz & Robin's "Adventure" (the original version of which is also slated to appear on the compilation EP). A virtually beatless endeavor in its original form, Usmev transforms "Adventure" into a more club-ready affair, keeping the tracks airy atmosphere intact while lacing the production with a stomping kick-drum, lurching bassline, and much more throughout the rework's 7-minute run. The budding Barcelona producer's take on Trulz & Robin's "Adventure" track can be downloaded below, where the forthcoming Dance Music Therapy Volume 3 EP can also be previewed ahead of its release tomorrow, February 17.

Pulled from the Polish artist's upcoming Compass EP, "Calliope's Dream" is a breezy dancefloor effort, one that folds a tasteful amount of disco touches between its tropical melodies, understated guitar strums, and interwoven layers of lightly brushed percussion. Selvy's "Calliope's Dream" production can be downloaded below, where the burgeoning beatmaker's Compass EP can also be streamed in full before it drops via Poland's fledgling (but so far impressively reliable) Transatlantyk imprint on February 24.

Hear George FitzGerald Remix Jon Hopkins' "Open Eye Signal" http://www.xlr8r.com/news/2015/02/hear-george-fitzgerald-remix-jon-hopkins-open-eye-signal/ http://www.xlr8r.com/news/2015/02/hear-george-fitzgerald-remix-jon-hopkins-open-eye-signal/#comments Fri, 13 Feb 2015 20:13:01 +0000 http://www.xlr8r.com/?p=86638 Jon Hopkins' excellent Immunity LP (which we deemed the best record of 2013) continues to be the gift that keeps on giving. Well over a year on from its release, not only does the album still stand up as a fine listen, but the record has also given way to its own Asleep Versions EP, and provided material for a number of quality remixes, including a new one from UK producer—and recent Domino signing—George FitzGerald (pictured above).

Taking on Immunity standout "Open Eye Signal," FitzGerald reshapes Hopkins' original into a more dancefloor-aimed affair, fitting the tune's darker textures between a steady four-on-the-floor while adding an array of pulsing synths and a slightly growling bassline to the procession. FitzGerald's "Open Eye Signal" remix will see a digital release tomorrow (February 14), but can currently be streamed in full via the player below.

"If you're looking for effective formula club tracks, then please skip through," Clone warns in its description of Sabre's upcomoing Morning Worship EP. Furthermore, the record is said to contain "four playful and emotive tracks without any of the modern club dogmas, [but] however, still strongly rooted in the more than 30-year-long tradition of our musical culture."

From the sound of the EP preview Clone has provided, Sabre's debut for the label appears to be a varied affair, one which ventures into both light and dark dancefloor territory, with plenty of percussion and off-kilter textures strewn throughout. Now, Foxman is set return to the label with a new outing early next month, complete with a pair of remixes from veteran NYC house artist Eli Escobar.

Again, Foxman has chosen to keep the title simple here, deeming the second effort for her fledgling imprint Firehouse 002. The upcoming EP is set to feature three new original productions from Foxman, which will sit alongside Escobar's "Super New Yorky" and "DJ Tool" remixes of the record's opening cut, "Open the House." Said to be a "stripped-back and hot" affair, Foxman's forthcoming Firehouse 002 EP will see its official release on March 9; in the meantime, the record's artwork and tracklist have been included below.

Entitled CODE-915913, the record is set to feature a sizable collection of the Russian artist's "post/tape-house" constructions, which usually bury a series of '90s-referencing melodies, re-pitched samples, and a sluggish four-on-the-floor beneath a bed of murky textures. One such cut is "Vectornaya Eyforia," a track that fits ping-ponging melodies and a series of chopped vocals beneath its blanket of dark and hazy chords. AL-90's "Vectornaya Eyforia" production can be downloaded below before the beatmaker's full CODE-915913 album lands on February 25.

Ahead of In Gold's official release on March 16, Donaldson (who, we should point out, has served as a contributor to XLR8R in the past) has shared a preview stream of his upcoming EP for the Amsterdam label, which we've included below alongside the record's complete tracklist.

Coinciding with the record's arrival, Dettmann and a number of his cohorts will take their talents around the globe, stopping in Berlin, London, Paris, and NYC, amongst other locations. At its base, "Inside Looking Out" laces a sparse, stumbling kick-and-rim pattern with woozy chord and a few pitched-down vocal samples. From there, .smuv and Repeat Pattern slyly slip in a number of additional elements into the procession; stringed drones, resonant bells, and even the creek of crickets all come in and out of focus across the brief—but no less head-nod worthy—beat's run.

M.E.S.H. Infra-Dusk/Infra-Dawn http://www.xlr8r.com/reviews/2015/02/m-e-s-h-infra-duskinfra-dawn/ http://www.xlr8r.com/reviews/2015/02/m-e-s-h-infra-duskinfra-dawn/#comments Thu, 12 Feb 2015 16:00:48 +0000 http://www.xlr8r.com/?p=86083 With no prior context, M.E.S.H.'s new two-track EP for Black Ocean, Infra-Dusk/Infra-Dawn, is a bewildering listen. Its two tracks clock in at five minutes each, but both feel much longer, as they've been packed to the gills with percussion, polyrhythms, and ghostly, repeating melodies. Based on the drum patterns alone, the songs could be classified as "instrumental grime" or even "bass music," but the sound palette bears no real resemblance to either of those worlds. With its industrial whirs, thumps, and crashes, the music sounds like something alien and not of this world. In comparison, last year's Scythian EP (on PAN) was a relatively easy, smooth listen, not to mention a more humanistic and recognizable effort.

With the right context, however, what M.E.S.H. is doing with these two tracks becomes apparent. A member and resident of Berlin's Janus club night and artist collective, M.E.S.H.—alongside fellow residents Lotic and Kablam—has a very specific aesthetic and sound in mind. In an illuminating recent interview with biannual "contemporary culture magazine" 032c, the Janus crew explained its ethos: "... we're searching for a sound that doesn't exist," said founder Dan DeNorch, likening the group's approach to the post-everything, anything-goes aesthetic of DJs like Total Freedom. M.E.S.H. himself went on to explain that contrary to the way traditional club music (house, techno, and the like) is designed to be mixed together to the point where the end of one track is indistinguishable from the beginning of the next, "start[ing] and stop[ping] is a part of what we do."

"Starting and stopping" plays a central role in both "Infra-Dusk" and "Infra-Dawn," as each track has been constructed from a seemingly endless number of distinct, ever-so-slightly-different phrases. Admittedly, this makes them somewhat exhausting to listen to, but by the same token, also makes them endlessly fascinating. Like a puzzle box, the productions seem to reveal themselves anew with each listen; that being said, despite all their rhythmic complexity, the two tracks do lack somewhat, coming across more like technical or conceptual exercises rather than well-rounded listens. M.E.S.H. is clearly a talented producer with a novel vision, albeit one that is still in the process of evolving. Nevertheless, Infra-Dusk/Infra-Dawn is sure to appeal to the adventurous listener and, perhaps, to the even-more-adventurous DJ.

Watch a New Video from Shlohmo http://www.xlr8r.com/news/2015/02/watch-a-new-video-from-shlohmo/ http://www.xlr8r.com/news/2015/02/watch-a-new-video-from-shlohmo/#comments Thu, 12 Feb 2015 15:54:33 +0000 http://www.xlr8r.com/?p=86569 Last month, Shlohmo announced that he would be releasing a new album, Dark Red, via True Panther/Wedidit, sharing a stream of lead single "Buried" in the process. Now, the LA beatmaker has unveiled the visual accompaniment to the production, which (as we reported) finds wobbly melodies, scattered drums, and distorted, hand-played basslines rise from a bed of electronic noise. The forthcoming record was deliberately crafted to be both violent and unsettling—an intention realized in director Lance Drake's video for "Buried." The seven-minute affair is described as a "surreal, bloody, and complicated nightmare that takes place on the gritty, blacker than black, abandoned, and desperate streets of Los Angeles, the artist’'s hometown."

The video for "Buried" can be watched in full below, where we've also included an updated list of Shlohmo's forthcoming European tour dates. Dark Red is officially due out on April 7.

Premiere: Stream SCNTST's Upcoming Sophomore LP http://www.xlr8r.com/news/2015/02/premiere-stream-scntsts-upcoming-sophomore-lp/ http://www.xlr8r.com/news/2015/02/premiere-stream-scntsts-upcoming-sophomore-lp/#comments Thu, 12 Feb 2015 14:15:12 +0000 http://www.xlr8r.com/?p=86537 After delivering his debut LP via the label in 2013, Munich-based producer Bryan Müller (a.k.a. SCNTST) is set to return to the Boysnoize Records fold with Puffer, his sophomore LP, next week. Ahead of the 15-track record's release, SCNTST's upcoming album is now streaming in full exclusively on XLR8R.

SCNTST's second long-player takes shape as a considerably ambitious effort, with Puffer's 15 hazy tracks appearing hesitant to tie themselves to any one genre. In fact, across the entire LP, SCNTST sounds equally at home crafting subdued dub techno as he does building dense ambient compositions, while also finding time to explore some broken rhythms, futuristic beatwork, and dreamy house constructions along the way. Spanning over an hour, SCNTST's second LP is a confident, patient, and deeply immersive listen, and—best yet—one that XLR8R readers can enjoy using the player below before Puffer sees its official release on February 16.

Wax Stag "Ascension" http://www.xlr8r.com/mp3/2015/02/wax-stag-ascension/ http://www.xlr8r.com/mp3/2015/02/wax-stag-ascension/#comments Thu, 12 Feb 2015 14:00:45 +0000 http://www.xlr8r.com/?p=86541 Wax Stag is the solo alias of Rob Lee, an English producer and multi-instrumentalist who has served as a hired hand for an impressive list of musical endeavors over the years. Having released his debut LP as Wax Stag back in 2008, Lee is set to issue his second LP under the name later this month via the fledgling Old Habits label. With the simple title of II, the record is said to find Lee exploring his "infatuation with slower house tempos, dreamy synth sounds, and vintage style drums all awash with melody and hooks," a description which seems fitting for the LP bonus cut offered here, "Ascension." Spanning just under five minutes, the track is built on a steady drum machine pulse which keeps "Ascension" driving forward as playful melodic bursts engage in a bit of call and response before being absorbed by an array of elongated synth tones and arpeggiated melodies. Wax Stag's "Ascension" production can be downloaded below before the UK artist's new album lands on February 16.

Luke Vibert Readies New Album as Kerrier District http://www.xlr8r.com/news/2015/02/luke-vibert-readies-new-album-as-kerrier-district/ http://www.xlr8r.com/news/2015/02/luke-vibert-readies-new-album-as-kerrier-district/#comments Thu, 12 Feb 2015 13:46:49 +0000 http://www.xlr8r.com/?p=86561 Luke Vibert will break out his rarely sighted Kerrier District alias on an upcoming full-length for Hypercolour. The veteran UK producer debuted on the label with the Ridmik LP (released under his own name) in 2014, which marked one of his most active years to date. But while Vibert's penchant for acid is well-known, his output as Kerrier District tends more toward funk and disco, as seen on two previous EPs and a self-titled album for Rephlex. His forthcoming 4 LP was reportedly inspired by Black Devil's 1978 cult classic—the Disco Club LP—and comprises "a glorious collage of samples, old skool drum loops, and large doses of acid funk and deep electronic disco."

4 is officially due out on April 6, and a complete tracklist can be found below. (via Resident Advisor)

KNX) has unveiled a new project for Stones Throw, NxWorries, which will find the prolific beatmaker collaborating with burgeoning R&B vocalist Anderson.Paak. While no official release plans for the pair have surfaced, Knxwledge and Anderson.Paak have today shared a full stream of their first single together, "Suede." Featuring the brand of effortlessly loose and soulful beatwork Knxwledge has consistently delivered over the years, NxWorries' debut single can be heard via the player below. Furthermore, the new track comes again with word that Knxwledge is currently working on a solo full-length album for Stones Throw; his recent (and quite excellent) contribution to the label's ongoing podcast series can still be streamed in full here.
