The history of Adam X dates back to 1990 in New York City, where he teamed up with his brother Frankie Bones to start Groove Records, which later became Sonic Groove Records, the first all-techno record shop in America. DJ Heather Heart joined ownership shortly after.
Throughout the 90s and into the first half of the millennium, Sonic Groove was one of the top techno record retailers for DJs & vinyl collectors across the world and the Sonic Groove team also took part in the organization of seminal techno events, including the legendary Storm Rave series. Starting in 1991, Storm Rave were the first all-techno warehouse parties organized on the East Coast. Line-ups included then up-and-coming artists like Sven Vath, Richie Hawtin and Damon Wild, with attendance reaching into the thousands.
