The title track from the recently released Nite Jewel EP, Am I Real?, is a bit of a new direction for the LA-based outfit. Lead Jewel Ramona Gonzales has taken a slightly different approach to her singing, adding an extra bit of structure and deeper soul to her oft-lilting vocal melodies, and the music itself is some kind of fractured funk—complete with slap-n-pop basslines—paired with a sparsely orchestrated ’80s ballad. We like it—a lot—and hopefully we can expect more of this from the other five songs on Nite Jewel’s new EP, which is available here.
