Just days after the release of his “Kalakuta” b/w “Ndizi” 12″ (artwork above) for 2nd Drop, British producer Pedestrian (a.k.a. Jack Sibley) has served up an edit of the record’s collaborative a-side, into which he mixes elements of Fela Kuti‘s “Zombie”—and to great effect. Named after a compound which belonged to the legendary late Nigerian musician, this sub-infused production sees Sibley turning the tables on his and Jasperdrum‘s original track, as he tinkers with a series of intricate and spacey FX. More noticeable, though, is the sullen mood that’s apparent on this edit; conjuring images of hazy alleyways and smoke-filled lounges far from the sunny fields of Africa, Sibley’s cut ultimately creates a fascinating disconnect between the buoyant spirit of Afrobeat and the sluggish, rainy atmospheres he evokes.
