A veteran London DJ and former Rinse FM regular (he helmed a weekly show on the station for four years), MA1 knows UK funky, having been a part of the genre’s scene as it flourished throughout the mid and late-aughts. Now, MA1 feels a UK funky resurgence is imminent, and in hopes of further adding fuel to the fire, has passed along an exclusive 60-minute session exploring some of the genre’s newcomers as well as its more familiar faces.

“The mix is made up of 90% unreleased and new tracks by the main producers of the UK funky scene,” MA1 explained in an email, before pointing out artists such as Geeneus, Roska, FunkyStepz, Crazy Cousinz, Hard House Banton, Fuzzy Logik, and D-Malice as some of the genre’s leading figures. Spanning an hour, the London selector’s mix touches on everything that makes UK funky such an intoxicating brand of club music—bluesy chords, bouncing melodies, soulful vocals, and, of course, an array of upswung rhythms are on offer throughout the session.
