We haven’t really said much about Baltimore sample manipulator Co La during the couple of years that he’s been active, but something about his new video for “Deaf Christian”—which is lifted from the forthcoming Moody Coup LP for Software (out May 7)—has caught our attention. Unquestionably, the strange and colorful visuals are at least partially to blame; it’s impossible to deny the unique allure of high-definition footage of various fruits being crushed by most of the producer’s pasty appendages. But the music of “Deaf Christian” itself also commands our focus, as the off-kilter rhythms of the warped doo wop samples are paired with a juke-like skitter to create a sound which defies classification.
