Brooklynite Tim Fite is in his own world. Of course the biting criticism of consumerism and commercial hip-hop that he offered on his last album, Over the Counter Culture is something we’ve all heard before. But for Fite, it’s the way he marries a folky flow with an MC’s audacity that makes him an enigma. With Fair Ain’t Fair, Fite still pokes fun at American shallowness in his twangy resonance as heard on the funky and flippant “More Clothes.” Yet this album is less harsh than his previous efforts, allowing him to grow as an artist who crafts more accessible songs (“Big Mistake”). This growth doesn’t stop him, however, from occasionally drifting into a depressive, drowsy state.
