All of the sudden, Maceo Plex is one of the biggest producers on the planet. Although American-born producer Eric Estornel, who now resides in Spain, has been turning out music for a decade, mostly under his Maetrik moniker, the rise of Maceo Plex in 2011 has been downright meteoric, largely thanks to his Life Index album and a series of well-received singles and EPs on the Crosstown Rebels label. He’s also started up his own Ellum Audio imprint, and, as if that wasn’t enough, he’s capping off the year with a one-sided single for Toronto-based No. 19 Music.

Somehow, despite the large increase in its quantity, Estornel’s music has managed to maintain its quality. “Under the Sheets” is no different. While it doesn’t have much in the way of “wow” moments, it’s not really supposed to. This is a warm piece of tech-house that’s not going anywhere fast. Anchored by its big, rolling bassline, “Under the Sheets” cruises along while Maceo Plex layers a myriad of synth sounds, some of which percolate in the lower registers while others soar and take the proceedings to new heights. (The synthetic horn line is particularly good.) There’s a lot happening here, but things never feel rushed or crowded. “Under the Sheets” is cool, relaxed, and it knows the party still has a long way to go.
