Now configured as a single CD-DVD package, Greensleeves’ round-up of modern reggae hits arrives slimmer than it used to. But with a tracklisting loaded with ovasized chunes, quality always trumps quantity. Interestingly, the disc favors new artists (Etana, Ray Darwin, Munga, Alborosie, Pressure) over tried-and-trues (Warrior King, Sizzla, Mr. Easy, Buju & Beres), with Etana’s strident set-closer, “Roots,” emerging as the pick of the one-drop litter. A smattering of variations on the lovers-rock theme are also included: Tami Chynn’s “Over and Over” and Pressure’s “Love and Affection” offer respite from the heavy roots vibes of Chezidek’s “Call Pon Dem” and Ray Darwin’s “People’s Choice,” which favor livity over levity.
